Default Having some minor problems...

Hey guys,

Went riding for about 7 hours this weekend and noticed a few things that I think may be abnormal.

It is sometimes very hard to shift into gear from neutral : When I'm stopped and the quad is running, sometimes (often) I press down on the shifter, I here a little click, but it stays in neutral. Sometimes I release the clutch on neutral, pull it back in, and it will shift into 1st no problem. But not all the time. I don't know if this is normal or not...

Also, my battery died today. The starter worked great when I woke up this morning. After a few hours of riding (lights on most of time). When I came to start it again after stopping, I would get a long click from the starter. It would click the 2 first times I hit the starter button, and the third time it would start up, struggling. At the end of the day, it wouldn't start up at all. (Push-starting this big pig is a damn pain).

When I got home, I used a voltimeter on my battery, and it showed 9 volts. I was riding a lot in between starts, but it doesn't seem to be charging. What's wrong?

Jeff

Not to sure about the shifter prob. I've been luck so far to not have to experience that one.
As far as the batttery. Been there. Mine went bad last year some time. All of a sudden just as you explained. I was out at Pismo when it happened. So I just bought another frm one of the loacal rip off shops. But I was glad they where there, else I would have been done for the weekend.
Thats what it prolly is. But may not be as well. Have you tried hooking a trickel charger to it and see if it will take a charge. And if it will hold it for any length of time? If not you should.
When ya buy a new battery, (If you do) get the black Yusa one. It's the best one for the DS.

Get it running again and hook up your volt meter while its running and see what reading you get. If its 12 or more then your charging system is good and your battery is bad.

mmm, dunno. if the idle speed is too high, its harder to get outa neutral. 1400rpm is ideal - don't need a tach, just idle high enough for it to be smooth when warmed up with no timing chain slap noise and that's about 1400. but other than that possibilit, I don't know. never had tranny issues, yet anyway

Okay, I don't have a tach, but I'll lower the idle a little since it seems to idling fast...

Where can I get a battery for a DS?? And how much will I have to pay for one...?

Any Bike shop should carry Yusa Batteries. On the side of mine the number are very hard to read. Mostly rubbed off. But I think it says YTX-15L-BS

If you are consistantly running into this problem could be a tweaked shift fork, donno if this happens much, or a worn shift fork, i have a rebuilt 02 tranny from not too long ago, sometimes it is a little tricky to get out of nuetral (about 1 in 15 times) what i do is while shifting play with the clutch lever a bit until it grabs the gear (let it go a little bit then pull in then let it go and pull in, ussually kicks in for me on 1st try... i guess it just needs a little more motion in the gears sometimes... but thats JMO

So, the fool-proof way of checking if it's the battery or the system is to start it up and hook a voltimeter to the battery TERMINALS??

If the voltage is 13-15...Then it's my batt...if not...It's the charging system...

One problem after the other...starting to get pissed off with this..

Before my last ride, I unplugged the oil pressure switch wire from the switch. I left the connector on the wire, and just taped it all up. Could it be possible this is the cause of the problem?!?!

Thanks
