'97 300 4x4, popping in front end??
#1
I'm new to 4-wheelers, so my knowledge is very limited. I just recently noticed a "popping" noise coming from the front end on my 4x4 when turning the steering wheel while the bike is stationary or moving. On inspection, there does not appear to be any grease fittings for lubrication. Is there a common problem that I am experiencing here, or am I in for major repairs? Please help with any solutions. Thanks.

Could be worn u-joint(s) on driveshaft, worn bearings at transmission and/or differential; could be worn CV joint(s) on half-shaft(s); worn bearing there.
Best wishes for an honest and reasonably-priced mechanic!

We've got three '93 300 4x4s, and they all started doing it a while back. I think it could be caused by the front limited-slip differential, like if you've ridden in the snow or mud or some situation where one front tire was stuck and the other was spinning fast for quite a while, it could smoke the clutches in the diff, glazing the surface of them, which would cause them to 'jump' while the differential moves instead of sliding like it should. We haven't torn em down yet, but that's what we've speculated the noise is.
