New DS Baja X owner needs advice
#1
I just bought a new Baja X and am wondering what to expect out of this Quad. I am relatively new to the sport Quad scene because I have been in the SUV Quad area. All of my buddies have raptors (notice the lower case letters). I don't fit on a raptor, Z-400, Kfx400, Banshee, Predator. I am 6'4'' 260lbs. The only other Sport Quad That I fit on was the Kfx700, But I got the DS X for $6400 and I felt it was more Quad for the money, Besides I used to race Sea-Doo watercraft on closed circuit and off shore and I know that Bombardier Rotax can't be beat for pure performance. Is there any "hot" set up for sprockets, Jetting and air box that will make a real difference? What about a CDI for the X? does it need one since the REV limiter is allready raised from the standard model. Any advice would be appreciated.

The DS is a good quad from the start. You just have to give it a chance to break in. My buddies DS was a dog at the beginning but it seems like the more he rides it, the better it gets.
He's gone down a tooth on the front sprocket and added a couple on the back. This is for riding on the dunes though so it may not be what you need. Just go in steps and see what you think!
Have fun!!!!

Aftermarket air filters, removing airbox lid, rejetting, exhaust. Pretty common stuff, except on a DS you can get an angled carb mount K&N filter and do away with airbox and plenum completely. Supposed to be a 2 hp gain. I dont think its worth the hassle though. Exhaust endcap can also be modified with a 3" chrome tip for tons more flow.
As for cdi's, they did raise the rev limiter, but by only by 200 rpms, from 7700 to 7900. BUT..what hurts the power more than the limiter is the stocker retards your timing at 6500 rpms. I just learned this last week, and went straight and got one, and it definately makes a difference! Several cdis to choose from and if you dont mind spending $400 you can get one with an adjustable limiter.

If you just want to do bolt on go with a K&N. If you can do without the air box just get a clamp on. If you ride in wet conditions and need the box take off the lid. Jetting will be neccesary at this time. A pipe is a good investment. If you want a slipon get a yoshimura or a pro circuit. Ive had experience with both. Full exhaust go with the Ron Wood pipe. A CDI is a must and Woods is a good one. Also check into an inline cooler. They are cheap but help it stay cooler. Engine ice is the coolant I choose. Cooler is better. Ajet kit will probable be needed next with the K&N and exhaust. Stock I would only change gearing for the sand. Good luck. I think you will love the quad and the guys here are more than helpful.

Just this week they started to sell the X, I pick it up in a couple of weeks. I believe that it is one of the first to come in to New York. By the way I live near Buffalo and there is some pretty decent riding around here. Thanks again everyone!

i have a 2001 ds 650 and the pro circiut pipe gave me the most ponies the most notable gains came however from mounting 23in knarlys' on the rear and 23in claws on the front both made by kenda. the tires tame the rotax beast and put the power to the ground. $300 (pipe and tires) and you increased top speed 6 mph and instead of spinnig in 1st 2nd and 3rd you accelerate and i mean hanging on for dear life acceleration
