ATC 185/200 rear brakes-need info please!
#1
Hey all,
I have a 83'185s trike. The rear brakes are bad & I know this may sound kind of funny, but I can't get the damn brake drum off the axle to replace the pads. It looks like from what I have seen on pic's of used drums on e-bay, that the drum has a spline in it, and should pull right off the axle. Mine seems to be rusted/frozen right on there. I've sprayed it with stuff (PB balaster) to loosen the rust or whatever is holding it on, and put a puller on it & ended up breaking out the holes in the casting of the drum. (it has 8 radial holes in it) I have heated it with a small torch, to try to help it off & that did nothing either. Am I missing something here? or is this thing just the most stubborn brake drum i've ever seen. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

(sorry for the english...)
Is the drum "rock hard" attached on the axle? Corrosion as you say!
try to use a hammer on the end of the axle at the same time as hammering on the drum while rotating it.
If quite loose drum:
On the pictures i have, it does not seem to be any holes in the drum or rear?
Somehow you have to manually force the brake shoes together, inside the drum.
The inside of the drum is probably a bit worn and that makes the fricition area of the drum to "sink" and leaves
an edge which stops the drum from getting off as it hooks in the brake shoe.

It's stuck on there hard, & will not move. I will try the hammer thing you spoke of & see what happens. hopefully I can get it to break free from the shaft. Thaks for the info.
