Default 700 in shop for 2 months

My 700 has been in the shop for the last two months!! After my fifth ride and getting the water pump cover replaced, the overheat light came on after riding about 1.5 miles. I let it cool and it didn't come on again until later in the day. We stopped and then the coolant shot out the top of the reservoir and 5 seconds later, the plastic T on the coolant line exploded - day was over; had to be towed out by a yamaha. They have looked at it and ridden it hard at the shop and they don't think it is overheating. Polaris has had them replace a ton of parts but they are stumped. The tech thinks he may not have purged the system completely the first time so that's why it blew; not from overheating. Any suggestions or similar experiences. I have had this ride since Feb and and only ridden 5 or so times (they were good times though. Had the most fun showing off to the Honda guys!!) Anyway, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is unfortunate that you have problems. Hopefully you dont lose faith. I do know that if the system is not purged right that it will cause all kinds of problems.

I'm trying to keep faith. The overheat light comes on but they temped the engine separately and it's only about 190 deg. They said the light is supposed to come on at 220 deg or so. Either way, I wish I had it. They aren't too many places here in the panhandle of Florida to ride. My buddies are going to Munford, Alabama in 2 weeks. I would like to join them but I don't need to 700 blowing up again! Oh well, we'll see.

if it's not that old, they should give you another NEW one or a REFUND. I dont know about Florida, but in Louisiana, lemon laws allow for "4 times in the shop for the same problem or 2 months continuous in the shop..." I dont know if it applies to ATVs, but it does to automobiles. They have to give you a new one, or a refund and i believe they have to give wages lost to you for losing time jacking around with them away from work. i had to take some law in college and this is what i seem to remember... i think.. ..or it could be the crack talking.... I'd also hafta agree w/ 20..... (except the crack,... hehehhee)... if you paid the money,... better get value,... I'd be all over the dealer like a Hobo on a Hot Dog,.... lotsa my friends have 700's,... NONE have ever over-heated.

Well? Lets look at what can cause it to overheat.
1. Engine running too hot. Possible causes: Running too lean, poor coolant circulation, for starters.
2. Cooling system not functioning correctly. Possible causes: Water pump not circulating properly, not enough coolant, cooling fan not working (could be intermittent), radiator fins dirty/plugged.
3. Ignition switch turned partially off. Possible causes: Not sure where the 700 ignition switch is but if it's on the pod like the 500s and if you have anything hanging on the key like another key then this could be your problem. As you turn the bars the hanging key can and will catch the gas cap and partially turn the ignition key enough to turn off the accessories/cooling fan but not enough to shut off the ignition. This happened to me twice with my 98 SP and on one of the occasions it blew up the overflow reservoir.
I strongly recommend you install a buzzer that is loud enough to hear when running at hi rpm and wire it across the Hi temp idiot lite this way you will catch it before any damage is done.
There are other things that can cause overheating but this should be a good start.</FONT>

Yeah, youre right but a "qualified" dealer should have been able to look at it like that and fix it. If not, make it up to the guy and give him a new bike. The guy has been without his bike for two months now. That's ridicuous.

I had the same prob! They told me that the 10 amp fuse was changed to a 20 amp but they changed the wrong one. I chased down the right one and had them change it and no prob since. There are 3 inline brakers one of witch goes to the fan that has a 10 amp braker in it.That is the one that needs a 20 amp in it The 10 amp blows before it cool down but it takes more current than what idleing the engine will give so it will idle all day with out tripping the the braker.I tested it with a voltage regulator.

I appreciate the feedback. The dealer I bought it from sucked. It's getting serviced at another one. When it was delivered, they never checked it out. The air filter wasn't even in it. And the spark plug wire fell off after owning it for literally 15 mins. THe sheet the tech is supposed to fill out never was, I didn't have a complete tool kit (or filters) and they never got back to me on the water pump leak. SHould I go to the BBB and file a complaint? Never did anything like that before but I am getting screwed.

If I were you, I would get an attorney, don't bother with the BBB. I had litigation over a car one time, the BBB was quite a joke, but when I hired an attorney I got their attention and a settlement. It might cost you $500 or so, but probably worth it to get it settled. I have not had the first problem out of my 03 700, coming up on 500 miles since I got it in January. It really sounds like you got involved with a dealer with poor service.
