#1
I'm new to these's 4-wheeler's.....just bought my wife and son a 01 and 02 250 TB each.....also got me a 2000 2x4 400 Scramber.....my ?'s are......It makes a rattling noise on the right side inside the cover where the belt is I guess.....it's not the chain.....also when you gun it from a stop or slow roll it seem like the belt slips a few seconds....like it jumps a few cogs...(is it a cog belt?).....also how do I stiffen up the rear shock....i'm a pretty big guy....I think it may need firming up.....how do I tell if the belt needs replaced.....also what do I need to do to service it....I know to grease the fittings, check air filter, and check/change plug....what else.....also....I haven't even looked for the spark plug on the scram or tb....are they easy to get to?........last but not least....how much air do we need to run in the tires.......I know these are alot of ?'s.....lol.....Thanks for all the help guy and gals
P.S. we went on our first ride today to Windrock in Oliver Springs, Tennessee.....it was great

on my 02 scrambler the belit is on the left side when your sitting on it..i can hear a piston chatter comming from the front right side maybe thats what your hearing?to check your belt pull the cover off and then you can pull the belt off you have to work the belt off by moving the rear wheels as you guide it off, once off look it over make sure there is no rips and fold it to see if it is cracking..might be a good idea to replace the belt either way just so you know what its been through...to stiffen the rear shock you can either grab the rear spring and turn it so it goes up the threads..tire pressure should be around 6 pounds depending on your riding style..

I have to totally agree with Scrambler in the sense that there are things you can do now that will ease your mind and help out the dependability of your scram and TB's such as what he said about replacing the belt now even if it seems OK. There is a kevlar belt sold by a polaris aftermarket company that I paid around $65.00 for that you can get at a autoparts store...The gates belt number for a NON EBS kevlar belt is 19AT4090 -this was taken from a post by Big Bad Scrambler. The belt I believe is around $25-$30
Just my 2 cents, but if you have any mechanical ability at all, do yourself a favor and get service mauals for both as soon as you can and do a complete oil change on all of them. The mauals are very well put together and can save you some serious cash over the long run. I would personally change out the oil in all of them. Your scram should have 2 different kinds of oil for it(crankcase oil and counterbalancer oil). I don't think the TB's have a counterbalancer and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, so it probably only needs crankcase oil. I use the polaris synthetic one myself for the crankcase and also use their brand for the counterbalancer. I went to a feed store to get a syringe big enough to inject the counterbalancer oil into the somewhat small opening on the engine(I'm sure there are other ways to do this). There are other brands of oil that you can use. I beleive one brand is Amisol(not sure about the spelling). You said you greased the scram already, but there are some grease zerts that are hard to see such as the one behind the plastic cover that partially covers the pull starter. try not to miss any. Imade a list of them myself. Hope this helps a bit. Also when you have a bit of spare time, do a few searches here on the forum and you will be totally blown away with the wealth of info from these guys and gals on here and I don't mean just the pro's either(although they are are very good themselves). New people join everyday that probably know more than I ever will so I never turn down anyone's help in here and try t help when possible myself. Sorry about the long reply. Safe and happy trails to ya.

Hi, New to this. Is the noise you are hearing like a thuddin sound under the cover, kinda like its slapping the cover?
There are thin shims on the inside of the driven clutch which is for belt adjustment. Mine had 3 in it. My 2000 2x4 400 started creeping when in gear causing harsh forward to reverse shifting.
After the creeping problem was figured out (with great help from the people in the forum!) , my belt had a little slapping going on till I acheived the proper shim thickness. I did not replace the belt but if I had I believe it would of corrected the slapping problem from the get go!
I did not replace it because I am 300 lbs and wanted too see if I could extend the belt life and save a few bucks.
You need to get the factory repair manual (about 40 bucks) because it will save you money if you are of mechanical ability.
Stuff ya need to know like counter balancer oil, belt adjustment. shock rebuild ect..
The shock should be a FOX Rebuildable unit if the 400 is stock. Have the rebuilder charge the reservoir a little higher than stock for your extra weight and crank the adjuster up when you reinstall it... Also check that chain adjustment becaue the machine is concentric drive and the chain does'nt have as much free play as other atv's.
I'm no expert so with the help of the forum you'll keep her running, but get a manual so you can show your son how to do it and eventually he can wrench all your woes away!!LOLOLOLOLOLOL..
Also dont forget to remind your son of the need for the helmet, gloves etc.. for the safety of the sport and explain the need to stay on observed trails so BIG BROTHER does'nt turn 4-wheelin freedom into a 3-wheelin dinosaur!
RIDE ON.....................DUG

The belt system operates like a snowmobile, as opposed to a Harley. (a V-belt)
