400 EX gearing question..
#1
Just wondering what people here have their EXs geared at. I have a '01 that's at stock right now. My buddy has a '03 that he just went +1T up front to 16(?), and he says he loves it. He felt that the low gears were too torquey. Has anyone else changed their gearing much, if so, any thoughts?
Thanks in advance...

You can never have too much torque. Go 14. the spacing bewteen the gears is shorter, but once you get used to it, it rocks!
if you don't like it - take it off and put back the 15. like stated above, 6.99 is all.

Well, most of the riding I do is on wooded trails here in WI. Sometimes we hit a lot of mud, but mostly we're on dusty trails, no sand. Mostly we do small hill climbs and jumps. My buddy believes the 16T front sprocket is the way the 400 SHOULD have been geared originally. I just found it a bit odd since I'm coming from the sportbike world, where most people go down a tooth up front for more low end. I guess I could always try it and see what I think. I was just wondering if anyone else has done it, or has any thoughts about it.

I found that going down one tooth in front was to much! Had to much trouble keeping the front end on the ground. So, I went up one tooth in back, for as a compromise for trail riding.

I went down 1 tooth on the front (14 tooth) and I love it. My EX is not completely stock as you can see from below. One reason I also went down 1 tooth on the front is because I am not running stock tires, I an now running 22" Maxxix Sur Tracks so I felt with the tire size increase that I should go down on the front. I love the way it feels plenty of torque for the woods riding and also plenty of top end for running down the sand along the rivers.
