Default Anybody replace their water pump impellar????

I was out riding last night and my 400 scrambler made a real high screeching sound then started pouring out steam from somewhere. So now im in the process of checking the impellar. What a pain in the *** its behind the pull start and flywheel. I got as far as the flywheel nut but I need a puller for the flywheel. Does anybody have any sugestions or advice for after I get the flywheel off??? any help would be greatly appreciated. Jay

Jay, once the flywheel is off, you're gonna want to mark the stator (this preserves your timing setting). You'll also need to purchase, or borrow from your dealer, tool #2870967 which you use in a clockwise rotation, to remove the crankshaft nut. Remove that 5 crankcase bolts (12mm). Remove 4 more nuts and 2 bolts (10mm). Be careful when removing the casting, because there are shims between the pump impeller, and the housing. There are two opposing seals that you should replace. # 3084184, and #3084185. I would strongly suggest getting yourself a maint. manual. It can save you lots of time and money. Ken , Right on. thanks for your fast reply. I just ordered the manual tonight had it shipped overnite which was 2 bucks less than the manual itself. But oh well need to get this beast running before aug 20th. Do you think it might have blown a head gasket? cant figure out where all the steam was coming from?? maybe overflow?? seem to have good compresion rode it back to the truck. anyways thanks for the reply Jay

It's pretty hard diagnosing that over the net. Maybe top off your coolant with pure anti-freeze (this will give the best help in locating the "leak") even better if you have some coolant dye, and a black-light. Take a good look around. Maybe even have someone pull the motor over will you're looking. You can also take some soapy water and squirt around the head, and base gaskets. They're actually not hard to change those out. You could replace the stock piston with a Wiseco at the same time....then you would be taking that out of the equation....then again, be careful, because if it is something else you wouldn't want to toast a new top-end. Kinda goin' in circles here, sorry, it's Friday...FRI for brain is Fried!

Ken, Thanks for all your help! I just removed the flywheel is it possible to remove the case without disturbing the stator and timing??? I feel like im so close and am having a hard time waiting for this service manual. I know Im going to need some parts and vegas is not very good about stocking them.(except for sports west). I have already done a topend with a .020 over piston to clean up the bore. It has about 30 hrs on the rebuild. and yes I am definatly going to replace the oil seals you talk about. I don't see the crank nut your talking about...Yet. but again thanks for your help. Jay

It's kind of a funny looking nut. I know Ken will bash me for this, but a good blunt chisel and a hammer will do wonders for it.

Right on Bubba, My kind of man!! I'm already po'd cause I had to pay 37 bucks for a puller that did't quite fit.Few minutes on the grinder and it does now. Although I will look into getting the right tool for the right job. Theres nothing wrong with ingenuity in my book
