Looking for any opinions on whether to rebuild my head with all new parts and a mild cam for about $350, or buy a slightly newer used head (mine is a 96 thinknig of getting a 99 or so) that is stock for about $150. I dont really race but I do like power. On the other hnd I would not want to decrease reliability.
Any advice is appreciated

you really will not decrease reliability even with the highest lift cam. as long as you keep the valves adjusted and do not over rev it will be fine. rebuild with new parts and high lift cam for sure.

 

I was told by the web cam people that the high lift cam would decrease the bottom end and I would have to put a different carb etc.

yeah you will lose bottom end, I had the .450" lift cam and it wouldnt get out of its own way until 4000rpm. But after that it had crazy pull.

 

If your head needs to be rebuilt then now is the time to mod. If it needs major service and you can get a good, used stock head for less $ and will leave it stock then buy used. I don't see why you would buy a used head and then mod that unless yours is totally fked.

 

If I was going to buy the used stock head it would be to leave it stock and save $.

 

Personally, I would say mod it. Relaibility doesnt go down, and you'll have a faster machine. You're taking it apart so you may as well do it!
