Default Retrofitting a 2000 Kodak

I have a 2000 Kodiak that I would like to retrofit with the rear disc brake shield found on the 450 Kodiak. The rear disc rotor and pads get eaten up in like 100 miles, and I rarely use the back brake!!! This is my second disc rotor and I'm sick of replacing them. Obviously Yamaha saw the problem and fixed it on the 450's (ie. installing the brake cover). So, has anyone tried this or is the disc brake system different between the 400 and 450. They seem to look the same when I went to see the 450 at a dealer. I have given up trying to talk to people at the dealers, all the ones I talk to don't know squat. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Mark.

Your bike came with one. Did you buy it used? The '03 450s have the identical brakes. The only difference is the brake shields on the 450s have holes in them where the older 400s are solid. If you are going thru a lot of pads then pull the caliper off and take out the two bolts that hold the pads in. They are probably rusty. clean them up with some fine sandpaper or wire wheel. These bolts are what the caliper slides back and forth on and if they get rusty then they bind. My bikes get roughly 3000 miles a year put on them so i go through alot of pads. I have tryed many brands and ECB seems to be the best. part # tsrp 954 for the rear and tsrp 670 for the front. I get them from parts unlimited.

Not to be critical of what you told Mark6, but I also have a 2000 Kodiak that I did buy new. My bro-in-law and I both bought new 2000 Kodiaks on the same day, from the same dealer, and neither of them had rear disc brake shields. I have seen 2001 Kodiaks without shields also. The 2000 Kodiaks did not come with the shields in the USA, perhaps in Canada, they did.

I agree with you regarding the ECB pads, much better than stock!

Yes, I bought it new and no the 2000 did not come with a brake disc shield. As far as I know it did not come out until they made the 450. So, my original question still stands. Has anyone retrofitted the disc brake shield onto a 2000 Kodiak. Will it even fit? Any suggestions are apreciated.
