Why the Banshee motor for drags
#1
My question is why do so many people spend big buck for modifing a Banshee to the extent on unreliabilty. Why don't more people put 4 cylinder street bike motors in quad (I know many do but most aren't set up for drags. In the Quarter mile my old Kawasaki ZX-11 with pipes, gearing change and good traction could get me down the quarter in just under 11 seconds. Now I never racered my old Banshee on the quarter I've saw others and many highly modified could get near the 10 second mark. I think the Ideal drag quad engine would be the new ZX-12 motor deavily breathed on. What do you guys think.

It may have something to do with the small feat of engineering that it requires to put any motor into a banshee chassis. Being a snowmobile racer also, i have been mulling over the idea of putting a triple SRX 700 into a banshee chassis. But i don't have alot of fabricating experience, and i really don't want to pay someone else to do it either. In addition, there is alot more info and experience out there in building banshees to run than other motors i would think.

I agree with 409. It takes a ton of fabricating in most cases to get the engine in, and then that much more just to get it to run right. The only transplanted engine I have seen run right is the tripple 500 on my webpage. I have seen a bunch of 4cylinders and none performed right. Its very hard to get an engine that is designed to run on asphalt to run correctly on sand or dirt. Then there is the issue of weight. Also, most people dont have street bike engines setting around waiting to be put in a frame. I can build a banshee engine for less than what it would cost to install a street bike engine, and 9 times out of ten the banshee will be faster. For those of us who are serious about drag racing, rebuilding an engine often is just part of the game.
