Default 98' Grizzly 600 Starter problems??

Sorry for the lenght.

Ok, My uncle had this 98' Grizzly 600, his current job allowed him no time to ride it, or try and fix it; he said I could have it if I came and picked it up from Chicago (I live in Arkansas). So last weekend I did... Supposedly it just wouldnt start, well, I got there, tried it, and even with 6 month old gas it fired up after cranking for only 20 seconds or so... dunno what his problem was, so I drove it up in the truck.

Then I get it home, new gas in it, drove it for about 6 miles with a friend following my on my 96' 250 4wd Suzuki Quadrunner incase it died... It didnt die until I got back home and was getting ready to park it... I noticed gas was leaking out the carb... Turns out that the Idle mixture screw (pilot screw) was missing. I called him, he says "Oh, yeah, I fogot were this spring went in the carb, so I left it out".

Order a new spring/screw assembly, got it today... but the battery was dead as it only holds a charge for about 2 days, so I hook jumper cables to it, can crank for about 10 seconds, then I realized that I left the fuel **** off. I let off the starter button, but it kept cranking!

So heres what I've found out so far, with the key off, and out of the ignition switch, soon as the jumper cables hit the battery cables it starts to crank. Even with the kill switch off. With the kill swith off it doesnt get spark, though. With the kill switch on, and the ignition switch off, it does get spark. I've tried disconnecting both the kill switch and ignition switch from the rest of the harness via the plugs under the front plastic, and with them both off/disconnected it will still crank when it gets power.

Now I'm no mechanic, but that isnt right, if the battery did have a charge it would keep cranking even after it started. They did, however, last winter use a salt spreader on it, salt was pretty much in every crevice, and making it rust pretty bad in some places, when I got it home I hosed it off real good, then sprayed all the rust with oil in an aresol can stuff like WD 40 to mabey keep it from rusting much more.
Also, the nuetral, and reverse lights dont come on when the key is turn on like it used to, not even when juice is applied. And the oil temp light used to come on when it was cranking, not anymore. It now will crank while in reverse and a foot not on the brake pedal, it used to not do anything in rev. and foot off the pedal...

So, anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped. I really wanted to ride it, too, the 6 miles I did put on it was absolutly insane compared to my 250 Suzuki.

Thanks!

I'm no mechanic but I'm trying to offer as much help as possible. check all and any fuses if there is any and get them replaced, and the obvious answer is you are going to need a whole new electrical system. battery, new wireing, and more than likely your starter isn't disingaging. that's why it keeps craking. that's a mess, just take it to somebody to get it fixed

Fuses are OK. Battery holds a charge, it was just dead from sitting. Its got a charge in it now. All the plugs/wires look OK with a little bit of corosion, but still look about like the ones on my Suzuki.
Now, I've did some work on cars, I'm still no mechanic, but I've changed a few starters, alternators, ect. on my own vehicals. I'm probably going to sound like a know it all here, but on another ATV board everyone keeps saying its the solenoid, I've always been told/thought the solenoid was what kicks the gear on the starter foward to engage with the flywheel? From what I've seen under the left cover on the engine of this Grizzly, it has no solenoid. They said the solenoid is above the left rear tire, well, how would something that kicks the gear to mesh with the flywheel be above the left rear tire? The gear that rides on the flywheel stays there all the time on this, thus no solenoid.
Now on the other hand, there is a starter RELAY above the left rear, this, from what I understand does nothing more than break the circut between battery and alternator until the start button is pushed. This could indeed be it.

So, is what I said above right? I came here hoping people would actually use proper terminolgy, cause if you cant get the little things right, why should I just them on the big things, you know? Even on the Microfiche diagrams it says it is a relay, not a solenoid. I read somewere on here, even, that it has a one way bearing in the starting mechanism, now, if thats the case, why does it need a solenoid?

I hope I dont scare anyone from replying by sounding like I know all! Please, if what I said was wrong, then let me know (with proof, preferably).

I have the same quad, sounds like your solenoid/relay/contactor (doesn't matter what you call it they all do pretty much the same thing) is stuck. With this happening your starter motor is continuing to recieve power, throwing you bendix into the flywheel. But if you don't want to fool with this I will offer you your money back that you have in it and will drive from OK to AR and pick it up. Thanks

call a yamaha dealership or ask the person who you got the bike from where he bought the then call that place up and ask them about it they might say to bring the bike down there because they will send it back to where it was made and have them fix it

good luck

Default Selonoid

The selonoid is on the frame on the left back side behind the battery box. When you hit the start switch it closes and send juice from the battery to starter. If it's stuck and doesn't open the juice is going to the starter all the time. Follow the battery cable, it goes right to the selonoid and from there to the starter.
