Well fellows it finally happened got a small problem, took my little boy for a real light trail ride noticed my speedometer not working when I was giving it gas when I let off of the gas the digital display would return, when I would give it the gas the digital display would disappear. When I turned the bike off no power but the winch would work that I have hooked up directly to the battery but no power to turn the starter and the lights had no power. I noticed looking at the electrical chart there are 2 circuit breakers near the battery but if they are open I wouldn't be getting a display on the speedometer when the bike is running when I let off of the gas would I??? I can start the bike with the pull start and it fires up and runs with the lights working and everything...got any ideas fellows thought I would get some input from some of you guru's before looking at it...thanks

Check on the front of the grill gaurd there is four wires there. They go to the voltage regulater one is a red and a brown the others are yellow and red and straight yellow Make sure these are plugged in. On my 2000 sp while pulling out grass and sticks ect mine came unplugeed and did the same thing havent had trouble since.

Your lithium battery in the headlight pod might be bad. The battery is part of the circut system that controls your speedometer, hour meter, cooling fan lots of other things. Remember the 99 Magnums with the same problems your having? The batteries where defective and the fix was just to install a new one. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Odin I am seriously thinking you are right on this one, I tried looking for what Jamie said but found nothing but after thinking it over the bike will start by just pulling the pull rope but is dead upon turning it off but the battery does have good power to it cause it runs my winch with plenty of power. Wonder if there is any posts to the Magnum problem maybe I will check that...thanks again fellows...you know how it is in these times with your first partial break down hehehe. Also when the bike is started when I give it gas the odometer display disappears. Maybe we could start a part of the forum called Polaris defects and break downs and they would let me be the moderator bet the Honda guys would love that hehehe.

Thaose wires are on the left hand side top corner you need to look real close or you can miss them. I will try to ask at work tommoro and see what they say

Thanks Jaime do you have to take the top cover off to get at the place where these wires are and also when yours did this did your battery completely lose its charge that is what I thought was strange is that my battery still has a full charge also that when my key is turned on without the motor running the lights won't come on that is what lead me to believe that it might be that battery in the pod...

You may want to check the circuit breakers at the battery. When you start the motor the stator will run the lights and every thing else. The speedo most likely freaks out when you rev the motor because when you rev the motor the stator will increase its output and the voltage is going to high and the speedo shuts down to protect itself. If the circuit breaker is bad then the regulator cannot sense the battery and does not have anyway to control the voltage output of the stator. Remember that the bike does not need a battery to run. Everything will work off the stator but the electronic speedo will not like the voltage spikes.
