I have gone to one roadless meething where they just give us info and they pretty much said "nothing will be differnt, just no new roads" What things should I ask in the feedback meeting? they said that all currant roads will be open..but dont they only mean main roads and not classifiy dirt ones as a road?? some pointers will be great. JRM, showing up at the Roadless Meeting may be the most important thing you can do. The agenda is determined by Forest Service policy, implemented by their "facilitators." Registering your attendance may be your greatest contribution.

When signing in, list one or more ORGANIZATIONS, such as AMA, Blue Ribbon, your local club, etc. The summaries and minutes of the meetings include organizations represented, but not necessarily the individual names of attendees.

Questions? The DEFINITIONS of roads, existing roads, etc., are important. For example, you may be using now a trail, whose width doesn't fit the official definition of a "road." Can you continue using this trail under the new policy? If not, why not?

What about building and maintenance of new trails (vs. roads)?

Try to get across the point you're interested in responsible ORV access to public lands; try to get a straight answer on what the new policy means to this access.

Good luck, and you have my regard for caring enough to go to the effort to attend and defend.

Tree Farmer, at the last meeting that I went to they gave the defintion of a road. "A road is any throughway that can be traveled by the standard american sedan" With that defintion we have a lot of non roads here in the national forests in Idaho. They also said that they aren't going to close the roads to OHV use, it's just that they will no longer be maintained. If they are found to be eroding into watersheds they will be closed, also if they are near steams or areas that have endangered species they will be closed.

JRM,

Keep going to the meetings. Our club goes to the ones in Woodland. Two of our members have a "official" respentation, others can come to the meetings. A couple of other motorcycle clubs comes also, but needless to say, the horse faces uh I mean people have us outnumbered 8 to 1.

Ask lots of questions & get them to explain what their "official" definition of a road is.

In a meeting a couple of months ago, they told us no "new" roads but they didn't plan on closing any roads at this time either! Yeh right, well see about the road closures.
