Default 250x smoking after rebuild--?????

Hello-
I just finished rebuilding my 250x-bored it out, new piston, rings, and I replaced the cam and rocker arms.
I just started it up today and its smoking-blue smoke-not a whole lot, and one minute its smoking more than it was, and then it stops smoking altogether...
Im trying to break it in right, keeping it under half throttle, varying speed, etc.
Could it be the valves-would it smoke if I adjusted them a little bit off? How exact do they have to be?
I was also thinking that maybe theres too much oil in there?
If anyone has any ideas or comments Id greatly appreciate-I would hate to be hurting the quad by riding it like this..
Thanks!
Will

are you sure everythings clearenced correctly? are the rings on properly? did you replace the oil seals? the valve adjustment shouldn't have anything to do with it burning oil.

I'm pretty sure the rings were installed properly(staggered), but oil seals?? do you mean the oil rings? And i did use some engine oil to help the piston in.
Thanks everyone

If it smoked at first and then stopped then there is no problem. You would have just been burning off the oil assembly oil that was still in the motor.

Oil seals....probably meant valve seals....they can get tired in an old engine and are a good thing to do when doing a major overhaul. Did you check your valve stem/valve guide clearance? A bad valve stem seal and a sloppy valve can cause this too. Who did your boring? Was it bored or just honed? Did you check it and make sure the clearances are right before reassembling? Would not be the first time somebody got it wrong. Can take it all to a local machine shop to have it checked if you do not have the correct mics.

Hate to say this....but when I used to rebuild car engines......I tried five different shops before I found one who did it right the first time.
