New guy with 98 400 sport engine ?'s
#1
Hi guys I'm looking into buying a 98 polaris 400 sport. I'm not that familiar with them & have a few questions. The engine is bad & needs work. Here is the info I have on the engine. It needs the cylinder, Piston, Rings & half the crankcase? I can get it for $1000 as is. The rest of the bike is in great shape. I figured I would just try to find a complete running engine for it. I can't find one at this point. Any suggestions? Snowmobile engine? I'm new to quads so forgive me if my questions are a little dumb

Welcome to the forums,You can keep an eye on e-bay for an engine. That doesnt sound like a bad price if the rest of the bike is in very good shape. You are probably looking at around $800 to $900 to get that engine back running right.Good luck with your decision.

Talk the guy down to about half of that or you will end up with more in a old machine than it is worth (more than you can get a good newer model)

Welcome! Can the cylinder be saved boring it far over? You can take them to .140 over safely and even go farther if necessary. That would remove almost even big gouges in the liner. The big thing is going to be if the counterbalancer is shot or not. They cost about $300 by themselves. If it is OK, then you can buy a brand new set of cases from Polaris with bearings for about $399. Cases need to be done as a matched set because that is how they are machined. Good luck and try to talk him down on the price if you really want it. He is probably selling it because he knows how much it will be to fix.

Hard to find used 400 engines. Polaris only sells crankcases as an assembly. They run $280 but it includes both halfs, all crank brgs., crank seals. I would have the rod and rod pin replaced too. What is wrong with the cyl.? You can bore them like 5 times before they are shot, unless it's cracked. Make sure you put a Wiseco piston in it. The Polaris pistons break skirts, probably why that one is down. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'm going to try to talk to him today. So we'll see. I am a little more encouraged at rebuilding this engine from your comments. I'll keep you posted
