Default First ride with "new" scrambler...thoughts...

If any of you remember i posted on Friday about the 2001 scrambler 500 4x4 i was going to pick up on saturday. I rode a couple hours last night and rode just about all day today...I LOVE IT!!! I rode today with a kawi prairie 700, a yfz 450, and a 660 raptor. As expected, the yfz kills it, but not really by all THAT much considering the yfz weighs over 200 lbs less than the scrammy. The raptor also beats it, but by much less than the 450. The kawi prairie is a tiny bit faster in accelleration, but on top end the scrammy is a few mph quicker and will reliably pass the kawi. The kawi's speedo showed 65 as i passed by, so i'm estimating the scrammy's top end of 66-68 with me (170 lbs) on it.

The handling of the bike is awesome...it does not in any way feel at all like a 4x4...feels just like a sport/race quad. I hopped off the scrammy and onto the kawi 700 for a minute and couldn't believe how much like a huge suv the kawi felt compared to it. On the scrammy, you ride the quad...on the kawi, you're along for the ride. So needless to say i think it's pretty darn cool to have a sport quad w/ push-button 4x4...that actually came in handy a couple times today. If i had any complaint at all about the handling it would be that the rear end almost feels too light...it kicks out almost too easily, but i'd MUCH rather have it kick out too much than not enough, cause at least kicking out to the side i know i'm going to slide instead of tipping over....does GREAT donuts too! The suspension kicks *** as well. I was playing around on a tabletop sort of obstacle, was probably about 8' up one side, maybe 15' across the top, and 8' down the other side, and i was playing around going faster and faster so i'd totally clear the top, and one time i launched a little too far and totally missed the downside of the hill and nosed into the ground. I was coming down way forward on the nose and was freaking out about how the landing was going to hurt like hell and was preparing for the shock, and to my surprise, it was nothing more than a soft "cush!" landing...that put a HUGE grin on my face!

The automatic is great, i don't even need to get into that, anyone who's had an auto before knows how much the like it. Anyway, overall i must say i'm very very impressed and happy with the quad so far.

Just one question about the 4wd...can i engage it while on the go, as long as the front tires are turning the same speed as the rears when i engage it? And i also noticed that it usually took a while to disengage the 4x4 unless i stopped and went backwards after turning it off...just like you would with an old 4x4 truck. Is that normal or should the 4x4 be off the instant you turn off the switch?
Also, i'm running 7 psi in the stock tires, which i think is a bit too much...how much do you guys usually run in yours or would you suggest for someone of my weight at 170 #?

Good deal. Happy to hear you enjoy it. As for the tires, I run about 8psi and 7psi in mine. I would suggest running 4psi in the back and 5psi up front, and see what that does for ya. As for the 4x4, you can engage it at any time, as long as you aren't spinning your rear tires faster than your front, otherwise, KABOOM!!!! It should disengage right away. If not try changoing the hub fluid. It seems to get dirty real quick. You can use the Polaris stuff, ATF type F, or Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, which is what I use. Just dont mix the Mobil 1 and the Polaris or type F stuff stuff. If you plan on doing a lot of jumping, you may want to look into a chain tensionor from HPD or Hot Seat. That will save you from a broken chain and cracked case. Although, I don't know if it will work with the swingarm skid plate. HPD or Hot Seat should be able to tell you that. Any more questions fell free to ask

I told you.lol Now your addicted. I run 4lbs in front and 3 in back for tire pressure. That is what the book calls for. If your tires are aired up wrong it can cause your shifting problems. The size ratio on tires is important for the AWD to work. The hub fluid change is a good idea as well, but my guess is your tire pressure. For that matter make sure they are 23" tires in front and 22' ties in back. Check with the dealer as to what to use for hub fluid, I'm not sure if ATF works or not. Polaris brand is labeled as AWD hub fluid and not ATF. It might be the same stuff, but double check. Good luck with it.

Cool! Glad you like it, it's an awesome ride and those other guys will appreciate the 4wd if you can ever talk them into getting in some mud!

I'd say change the fluid as well, that is most likely your problem.....I do know that once you engage 4wd and then turn it off it won't disengage until the engine is at a certain RPM...

I run about 6psi up front and 5psi in the back....I may bump them up 1psi depending on where I'll be riding.

I'm sure with a littel TLC you'll have it running flawlessly

And remember, keep the rubber side down!
