I need to know a good 4 stroke synthetic oil to use in my 99 500 HO. Something cheaper than the polaris oil, and easier to find. Also the numbers to other oil filters would be helpful.

I also would like to know an alternative gear lube for the gearcase. I changed my gearcase oil and the dealer was closed. I used slick 50 gear lube. Will this cause any problems?

Thanks, Jeremy 99 500 HO

I use mobil 1 15W-50 for the engine with a wix 51358 oil filter. I also use mobil 1 synthetic gear oil in the tranny.

My dealer as well as the manual says to use staight 40w synthetic oil for my 2000 scram 500. I to was looking into mobil 1, but they don't make a straight 40w. How is the 15w50 different? Will it work in the 500?

Craig88,

Straight 40W?? Do you not mean 0W40? There is a big difference.

I believe Polaris recommends their 0W40 Synthetic for use in all their 500s. It is not cheap but, the difference between that and the Mobil around here is not great. It also doesn't take much per change, so what is the big deal. I just use the recommended stuff.

Craig88,
Whether or not the 15W-50 will work depends on the weather conditions you ride in. I live in Louisiana, where the temperature is running in the 90's for the summer. That is why I run that particular weight of oil. When winter hits, I will change the weight back to Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-30. It only gets down in the teens a couple times per winter, and I'm not usually riding when it gets that cold. What are the temperature ranges that you ride in?

I select different oil at different times of year also. I use the same weights as Walexa.

I did mean 0w40. Your right about the price of polaris vs. mobil 1, there isn't really a price difference. As far as temps go, I ride in the summer when it reaches anywhere from 80-90 and in the winter it gets as low as -15.

what would be the wieght of the mobil 1 synthetic gear oil used sae 75, 80 ,85 , 80w-90 hypoid,90 hypoid , 85w-140 hypoid, for the tranny on a '00 sportsman 500, also would you use the same gear oil for the front differential? And finally is there a different type of synthetic Mobil 1 ATF used for the front hubs?

getting ready to do the first service and i am going change all the fluids

My dealer told me that mobile 1 is who makes the oil for Polaris so go figure...if your bike is still under warranty I wouldn't take any chances putting a strange oil in it...

I don't believe that Mobil 1 is who makes Polaris' oil. If that was true, it seems to me that Mobil 1 would offer the same weight (0W-40) as Polaris does. I could be wrong though.
