Thinking about getting a used 01 Raptor
#1
OK, a guy I know has an 01 Raptor for sale. It is bone stock and has only been ridden in the dunes. It looks almost brand new. He outweighs me by about 40+lbs (I'm 210), and he has never had any trouble with it. I've heard of the transmissions going out on the 01s. How often does this happen, and is it only from thrashing on them? I think I heard something about the rear shock having trouble ,too. What about that? I just need some good info to make an educated decision.

yes..more than likely the tranny will go. it was to do with the design of the gears (3 dogs vs 4 dogs on the 02+ trannies) all is not lost though. you can get the tranny upgrade kit for $350-$450 and do the swap yourself. there is even a website dedicated to helping you walk through it. Raptortranny.com.
Magnolia is the cheapest dealer around for the kit.

there are a lot of people still running the 01 gears with no trouble.........but there are a lot more that have had to replace them with the 02 gears.........
if it is cheap enough it would be worth the risk.........I would think...

Bassetboy55, you live in Royce City? That's pretty cool. I used to race out at North Texas Motor Speedway a few years back. Small world, huh? I wish I was back in Texas instead of South Korea! Sorry about the Texas/Oklahoma game. Don't worry, I'm not rubbing it in. I hate the Sooners.

I agree with Gary.....I've had to fix all the "Raptor woes" and it's a drag. Budget in the 02 Tranny, One-way, and a choke cable at a minimum.....

OK, someone needs to stick up for the 01. It may or may not go out. What some of these guys are forgetting to say is that some 02's have gone out as well. I ride mine pretty hard and haven't had any trouble. Try it out and see how it shifts. Does it make any noise. How does it shift into reverse. I know on mine when I shift into reverse I have to hold the **** and let the clutch out slowly til it engages or it will slam into gear. Maybe that is what causes them to go out. Listen to the starter too. The 01's have problems there too although mine hasen't. If it's stock, you can get it for around 3 grand I would think. That would be a pretty good deal. And remember, the 01's have no reverse limiter so you can roost backwards.

I love my 01 Raptor.
Oh no , I smell something it must be time for its diaper change.
