Default 2001 AC 500 Manual Info Needed

Oh Great AC Experts,

Never hurts to start out with a little sucking up. I found a 2001 AC 500 manual for sale in our local paper. Here is the vitals. The owner bought it new, only has 130 miles on it and has been used VERY rarely (obviously). Guy decides he can't justify having it if he is not going to ride it. It is totally stock. I asked him about maintenance, and he tells me he has NEVER done anything to it. I am a little shocked by this. He has not even changed the original oil. I would have thought he would have taken it in to get the valve clearance checked and the initial break in oil changed. He is asking $4200 for it, but I feel he would entertain less. Do you think damage has been done by his lack of initial maintenance???

Can you refresh me on the 2001 specs. If memory suits me, this one had the black engine, and had the better (not Dunlops) tires on it but they were the 10" wide 25" tall tires all the way around. I cannot remember if the 2001 had the temp sensor for the fan or not. I know one year they were wired on full time.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Allen

If the machine only has 130 miles on it i wouldnt think there would be any damage caused by the lack of maintenance. its only 30 miles over oil change and there are a lot of guys on here that dont get the valves checked for a lot longer than that.

Check the link, it has the basics for a 2001. IMO the 2001 a/c has the best front diff A/C offered for the 500. Limited slip like the older models but with 2X capabilities. Average Retail: $4190.00 (NADA)

uh008 That thing sounds like it's in mint condition, most people don't bother adjusting the valves until a lot later. I checked mine and they were in spec.

Tricat how do you make the old diff a 2x4? My buddy has an 01 with the 26" titians and that front diff locks up way better than mine, I am looking to upgrade to a better diff but I want 2x4 also. His is full time 4x4 and the housing looks different than mine but it been a while since I looked at it.

Thanks

Are you sure your buddies is an 01 or a 00. In 2000 the manual was a full time 4X4 just like the older ones. 2000 was also the first year for the auto. This had 2X selector. In 01 they used the same diff on both the Auto and Manual w/selector. This diff has the selector lever on the left side of the diff and engaged/disengaged the ring gear. In 02 A/C changed the diffs and the selector is at the top of the pinion housing. It engaged/disengaged the pinion.

I used a Suzuki King Quad diff on mine. I had to change 1 axle and the ring/pinion to get the proper gearing. Olddirtybasterd has one in his 03 500i, but had to change both axles.

IMO the easiest way to lock the new units is send it to Dirty Howies. $100 bucks + freight. Ya it would be full lock but you can shift into 2X.

I think it is a 2000 now that you mention it. I am going to look into the diff on the 650, but that might not be very cost effictive.

Guys, and especially TriCat,

Thanks for the input. Sounds like it would be ok then. I was just concerned about having the same factory original oil in the thing for almost 4 (model years) now. I would have thought that with it being the break in oil that I personally would have changed fluids around 50 miles or after the end of the first year. I may shoot him an offer around $3800 and see what that gets me. Once again thanks for the link and the input.
