Rubicon Hunting report @ -12F and seen the worst blown engine ever!
#1
Returned from my elk hunt this week. No elk but the rubicon started up perfetly with only choke at -12F, this was with amsoil 10w40 motercycle oil in it. There were a few odd squeeling noises for a few seconeds if i tryed to rev it up in netural before it got warm, but then everyting was perfect once warmed up for a minute or so.
Now to the blown engine- by far the worst i have EVER seen!!! Get this, the guy in the camp next to us pulls up with his 40' moterhome with a 88' 4runner behind it (towed with tow bar) and he gets all ready to take it off and park the 4runner. He goes to start it and it just spins like the starter is not catching the flywheel.... we pop the hood and there is OIL EVERYWHERE! I notice a huge hole in the side of the block with remanins of connectng rods noticable around the crank... My friend notices that the head is lifted off the block by about 1/4" as well..... The owner was mechanicly knowledgeable and his face got white when he rembered that WHEN HE LOADED THE 4RUNNER UP, HE NEVER TOOK IT OUT OF 1ST GEAR!!! He also said it was hard to get the diesel pusher moterhome above 40MPH for the first few miles!!! then it freed up and towed fine!!!!!!!!!!!! He called when he got home and invited me over to take a look at what he found when he began removieng the engine, He found crunched up valves in the catolitic converter, the pistons were punched threw the center only leaving the skirting and rings--- the pistion pins were broke away from the piston and still on the rods-but the bottom end was broke free and the crank wacked them thew the block! I will have to get photos as its 100% crazy to see in person! 40MPH in 1st gear? whats that, 20,000RPM!

I think the RPM would be more like 7-10k rpm. I'm too lazy to look up numbers, so if I guess it has a 5000 rpm redline at 20 mph (conservative, I think, my car runs to about 29 mph at 6k rpm in first), that'd be 10k rpm at 40 mph.
But good gosh, please send pics! That'd be very interesting to see.
