I bought a Garmin gps12map and I am wondering if anyone has used mapping cd's for their gps and which one is best for off road trails.I am picking between the Roads & Recreation cd or the topo cd. It will mostly be used on trails in the Colorado mountains, old logging trails, mine trails etc.

I have the Garmin eMap. If you only intend to use the GPS with your quad get the Topo. If you want to us it to navigate your auto or walk the streets of a city it's a much tougher choice.

I know the software costs a fortune but I bought two map discs. The Topo for off road (hiking & quad), and the Metroguide for everything else.

Here's a site that sells the stuff if you are interested.

I bought US roads and rec for $88 here http://www.safetracgps.com/USA.htm
It was a hard call and after playing with both at the local store, I got the Roads as it has all the forest road numbers listed for even the smallest road. The topo just shows the road, no number. Road numbers is something i need in my 4x4 truck But if I was off-road the Topo is best as you can "see" valleys and steep sections. The US roads also has great city street info, as I get my country a$$ lost in Portland all the time

Go to www.maptech.com. This is the most complete mapping program out there, and the most expensive, but it shows the detail you need. Maps are available on a "per stste" basis.
