Proper oil for 2003 Scrambler 500???
#1
I just bought a used 2003 Scrambler 500 without a manual. I have ordered a service manual, but it wont be here for a while. So I need to know what the proper oil is. Whats recommended by Polaris, and what intervals? Quantity? What about the grease for greasing the zerks on the chassis and axle's, and such. Please give me all the info you have time to type in, I would greatly appreciate it. What other maint. is recommended? I have ridden it about 5 hours since buying it, without doing anything to it. But I want to start maintaining it asap.
Thanks
Justin

It takes 2 quarts of Polaris 0w40,with oil filter change I would stay with the polaris oil... I change my oil every 30 hours or if i go in water i change it after that ride... It takes 1 quart of trans oil i would change that as well.. You also have to change the Hub oil in the front awd hubs they dont take much, hub oil is very vital that must be checked and change when needed.... The front gear case take 80-90 weight gear oil, nothing specail it also dose not take much 1 quart will do about 5 changes, i think...I grease all the fittings about once a month, 2 on the swing arm u joints ( be careful if you pump to much grease in the u joint you can blow the caps off them) there is some more grease fittings just take a look around there is not many tho... Check your air filter.. Every 100 hours you have to do valve adjustments... I would use all synthetic oils and grease, The only thing you dont have to buy from polaris is the front gear case oil.. the rest stay with polaris...
If you needed anything else let me know...
Hope this helps....

When you change your oil, don't forget to drain the crankcase as well. The drain plug is located under the skid plate. It is horizintal and faces toward the left side of the machine. You will get about a cup of oil from that. Also drain the starter.recoil housing. The drain plug for that is near the crankcase drain plug. Drain it more often if you ride in wet conditions. The valves need to be set at .006". I have the pages out of the book if you need them sent to you. Keep your chain lubed and adjusted to spec of 3/16"-3/8" deflection. Drain the sediment tube in your airbox often. Change your coolant every 2 years. Also blow out the dust in your clutch housing. It is all a personal preference if you want to run Polaris fluids or other brands. I run Amsoil 0W-40 synthetic engine oil and Amsoil chaincase lube for the trans. And Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the hubs. But that is just because my dealer is 45 miles away and it is easier tp get the Mobil 1 and Amsoil. But that is just me

Wait til you get the manual or the oil changing procedures from some one. There is a procedure for purging air from the oil pump as well as cleaning the oilt filter screen in the resevior tube. Not real easy to explain, but the manual covers it real well.
