As of right now i have an 87 trx 250r with a pipe, rad valve, carbon reeds and a k&n filter. I mostly do trail riding now. My 250 used to rock when we rode at the pits around here, lots of jumps etc. But with mostly trail riding now I must say it is toally unpleasant as a trail ride. So I was wondering if you scrambler 2x4 owners(sport 400 owners) could tell me the ins and outs of this quad.I know it's not that fast in stock form, but if i get one i would get a pipe and prolly roller clutch. Thanks.

Were you thinking about a new or used one?
I bought a new one and started modding it out the week that I got it.
You probably won't like the handlebars on it, so change them first thing. The pipe and clutch kit is the next step, they make a world of difference....
I put a set of Delta 2 reeds and a spacer in mine, and on a good day, I would guess that the engine is making about 50 HP. The quad is very quick, and the auto trans means that all you do is feed it more throttle, because it's always in the right gear.
I ride in open woods and logging roads, with some tight spots here and there, and really like mine, but I haven't had a chance to get it into the mud yet.....

I was gonna buy a new one. Also have you experimented at all with any type of weight loss with your 400? Also have you raced any other sport quads?

I have a Sport 400, I love it. No mods yet, I was going to get the RCR kit untill I read CaptNemos report on his. CaptNemo, My funds are limited, I can only do a bit at a time. What do you recommend? and in what order? Please anyone give me your advice. Thanks. To the first post, I love my Sport, but I went from a 250 timberwolf to my Sport, a big improvement, but I have nothing else to compare to.

Weight, go for lots of aluminum. Get rid of the floor boards and install regular pegs with nerfs. That will help some

The clutch kit will make the biggest difference in seat-of-the-pants feel, if you're planning to put a pipe on shortly after the clutch kit, specify a kit for use with a pipe.
The pipe and rejetting the carb is the fastest, and most dramatic way to boost HP.
For an inexpensive 1 to 2 HP producer, change out the air filter for a K&N or UNI, and remove the front wall of the air box, if you can afford to loose some water protection and river fording ability. You normally don't have to rejet, but checking the sparkplug should be done just as a precaution.

When i get my scanner fixed!

About how to do it, i have no idea. There was a guy on here that did it. His name i don't know but he had a 400L and he did all this stuff to it and called it like the 400SS, it was Black! Looked awesome too.

I think he used Banshee spec nerf bars and honda recon foot pegs and made his own brackets. Doesn't seem too hard. I was going to weld a piece of steel to my frame, have about an 1" hanging down. Then for Nerfs, well, i've never owned a set. But i'm sure making brackets for them would be quite simple.

Just need access to a good mig welder, and someone on that can use it if you can't. A torch set and a grinder might be usefull too.

I think i just remembered his name. It may be Jack Shultz!
