no there is no kick start. It's a nice bike. The pros are that its one of the most reliable quads ever built it has some power and will take you most anywhere. It also handles very well and does well on whoops. Cons are its not as fast as other bikes in its class, its air cooled, and struggles on really big hills. Other all though it is a great bike and if you want more power there's plenty of aftermarket parts for them. They're not all that expensive anymore either

I'm pretty sure you can get a kickstart from an xr400. But i think you have to Cut some of the rear fender considering it is a backwards kickstart.

Ditto that. My brother has one, too. He has had it for 2 years, no probs at all. That elec start is awesome.

If you don't like electric starts you probably shouldn't even buy a quad. I don't know of any 4 stroke quads that have a kick start (not saying there isn't any) except the new 450r.

That's wierd, I have never heard anybody complain about an electric start.

The electric start isn't a bad thing at all. About the only downside to the 400ex is no reverse. All these people whine about the thing being "outdated" and "underpowered". Don't listen to them. It will be a big improvement over the 250x and the 400 still has some of the best handling and frame geometry around.

when i bought my 400ex i was kinda bummed there was no kick start but i havent had any problems with the electric start and as long as i keep te battery and charging system in good shape i dont think i will ever have any need for a kickstarter
