There was many different models of the big red I'ved owned ar ridden every model. There was a 200 chain drive without reverse, then a 200 chain drive with reverse, then a 200 shaft drive with reverse all of the models didn't have suspension. The last model was a 250 shaft drive with rear suspension it was quite a bit bigger than all the other models. Honda also made a atc called the 250sx last year was 1987 I know because I own an 87 and an 85. My family has 7 different 250sx's in the last 15 years. the 250sx was a sporty version of the big red without the racks and not so bulky. The recon took the place of the old big red 3 wheeler and the 250ex is the replacement for the 250sx.

The Big Red was Honda's top of the line utility ATV at the time, believe it or not. Something more akin to today's Rubicon and Rincon, if you can imagine.
First available as a chain driven 200cc without reverse as Christoblue mentioned, the Big Red finally matured into a fully outfitted 250cc with electric start, reverse, shaft drive and front and rear suspension. It also featured both front and rear racks and had many available options offered by its dealers.
The 1985 250cc Big Red my family owned featured every option Honda offered, including extra large front and rear racks, self healing tires, and, believe it or not, nerf bars. Of course, the nerf bars were actually heavy duty brush guards, but the design was principally the same as the nerf bars used by racers today.
The Big Red models were extremely well built and very hard working. There are many of them still in use today, and that's quite a testament to their quality considering the last Big Red model will be 19 years old by next year.
The 250SX, also as Christoblue said, was the "sporty" version of the Big Red. It shared the same 250cc engine and shaft drive, but it was devoid of cumbersome racks and had sportier tires. It was probably, aside from the ATC250R, ATC200X, & ATC350X models, the most fun three wheeler Honda ever made. It was (and still is) very peppy and was often modified to provide even more fun. Some 250SX owners attached aftermarket racks to gain more utility use from their machines, but at heart, the 250SX was a willing play machine.
For information about the TRX250R which was worlds apart different from the Big Red, just keep reading this forum. The TRX250R was Honda's legendary high performance 250cc two stroke racer in quad version. Unlike the Big Red which was made for hauling heavy loads, the TRX250R and its ATC250R sibling were made for hauling nothing but major butt!!!!!

My older brother had a 1985 250sx that had been ported and polished with a new cam installed, it also had a 200x front wheel and rim with wheel spacers on the rear. The trike had alot of torque and would beat a 300ex in a drag. These old 250x 3-wheelers are still worth alot of money. My younger brother sold one 5 months ago for $1100 and I just sold one of mine for $1000 this past week. I got a new dvx400 so I needed to sell one of the other toys.
