Default Rear axle bearings

How long are the axle bearings lasting everybody on their DS's. I have had my 03 just over a year and there gone. Im getting the odd grinding noise from time to time in the bearing carrier and I have play from the bearings.

I've seen the axle nut work loose on the DS's. I'm sure if you don't check it regularly, this could be one reason you can "burn" through a set of bearings.
