Default High temp on EGT

I just got finished runing my DS around the block a couple times after getting my EGT working. Idle about 800, mid rpm's about 1250-1275deg, and full throttle at 1400deg. I know that is too high and quickly let off. I am using a 285 main, 95 needle fourth notch from top, and pilot drilled to .062in. I was told that the 285 was too rich, and to use a 270. What do you think, would a main that is too rich cause the temps to go up, gas exploding in exhaust. I am getting some poping coming off full throttle. Should I go up or down on main, I dont want to hurt it.

I'm running alky, so you can't tell by the plug. I will check though, I guess if it is lean it will look very white, not sure.

Jerfinds,
Sounds like lean condition, high temps are from not enough fuel hitting the piston and combustion chamber to evaporate and dissapate some of the heat. Popping out the exhaust also indicates lean, but mostly in the idle circuit or pilot jet, try turning out the mix screw, if you have to go past 4 turns, you may need to go up on the pilot.

Thanks for the help, thats what I thought too. I had the 300 main in before and it did run better that the 285, but I did not have the EGT in yet to check temps, nothing to compare too. I will go to a 295 and check again to see my temps. I have been reading up on jetting and have read that one size jut is equal to 50deg and one notch on needle will also change the temp 50deg. I'll post back with my results.
