Freight and assembly fees, Invoice and MSRP
#1
I am looking to buy a new Suzuki LT-Z400 here in a few months, and was wondering what is acceptable and what isn't as far as fees go. I just went to the local dealer, and he told me that freight and assembly fees were "legitimate fees." They are charging $150 for each if I remember correctly.
How much profit are these guys making? What is their profit if they sell for MSRP with no fees? How much leverage do I have in telling them that I won't pay the fees? I plan on paying cash for it once I get it all saved up. Would I be better off getting financing and then paying it all off at once?
Does anyone know of a good place to buy Suzuki's near Boise Id that doesn't charge all of the fees? The only place I know of is Carl's Cycle.

F & P charges are made up. The dealer even gets paid back by the manu for assy. Dont let them do it to ya get a price in your head and pay that amount only. I know this i used to sell them.

Ryan, you should defiantly shop around, most of the dealers around me charged
the freight and processing fee's which are a load of crap.. I ended up driving 2 hrs
one way for mine, and several more for my kids atv's... Always ask for the out the
door price, which should include all of their fees and taxes and the price should
be at or below msrp.. it takes a little effort but you'll find a dealer willing to give you
a fair price... you can find the msrp's on the manufacture's web pages

Shop around. Unless a quad is a new model that everyone wants, don't pay more than the retail price "Out the Door". Try to get them down at least a few hundred under the retail price. Out the door with no other cost. You do not have to pay anything you don't want to pay. Just like they don't have to sell it for a price they don't want to accept. If you cannot come to an agreement then go somewhere else.

Well, I did some shopping around, and found a Mom and Pop shop locally that sells the Arctic Cat version of the Z400. I asked them for an out the door price, and they quoted me about $230 over MSRP, including all taxes, licencing and title fees. This sounds pretty good to me, considering that tax here is 6%, which would be almost $300 alone not including the licence and title fees.
I was considering driving over to Oregon to get a better deal (tax free), but my time and expense of driving over there might not be worth it. At least if I buy it locally, I should get better service shouldn't I? I mean if something were to go wrong with it, I could just take it up the road to where I bought it, and they'll already have all my info on file, as opposed to driving several hours... I dunno. What do you guys think?
Also, what about warantees...I don't know if this Mom and Pop joint has a certified Arctic Cat mechanic, if the tranny falls appart, do I have to have them ship the quad back to Arctic Cat, or what? Most things I can fix, if the warantee will allow me to just exchange a component and do it myself. I really wouldn't want some schmuck working on it that doesn't know what he's doing. Or at least if someone has to work on it that doesn't know what he is doing, I'd prefer it was me!
