Recon 2000 & 2001 Cannot keep head bolts tight!
#1
Hi all
I have several Honda Recons for my citrus ranch and every one is developing a problem with the head bolts-
They loosen constantly!
I have tried loctitie and even JB weld to no avail.
Is it back pressure or poor breathing?
I have taken it to the dealer only to have the problem pop up the very next day after being "repaired"!
HELP!

Both my Recon and 250EX (same engine) have never had any problems. Have you considered that the extreme summer heat might have had some effect (a warped head?)? 120 degrees in the shade is a lot of heat for an air cooled engine. And , if these are work quads, they are probably being run at slow speed, right?

This is not a common problem for Recons at all, matter of fact, I've never heard of it. And you say ALL your machines are doing it? I would try replacing the head and base gaskets and all the pertinent studs and nuts, and CAREFULLY apply the proper torque.

Its coming up I will have had my 99 Recon for almost five years and its been through every type of heat, cold cycle that you could imagine and the head bolts have never been touched.
I have never heard of this on ATV connection forums

Its never been a problem on my 01 recon which gets rode in humid +30*C to -20*C. Its defitnly not a common problem and I haven't heard of it happening before. If all of your recons are doing it then its gotta be something the dealer is doing wrong.

Tis wierd!
Its happened on 8 of my recons.
It may the heat as they are not used as “play” quad. I know the guys go slow and when they stop to look at trees and irrigation they leave 'em running.
So perhaps overheating is in fact warping their heads.
We had already done a complete job of re doing all the head bolts.
I will have the mechanic check on warped heads.
And maybe I’ll have to install an air fan on ‘em to keep em cool.
