Reed spacer?........ Which one?
#1
I have a Boysen Rad Valve on my 2000 Yamaha Blaster. I was wondering if I put on a reed spacer would it make a difference as far as performance goes? If so what size should I get? I thought about purchaseing one but not for sure yet.

They essentially are used to tune intake runner length. Remember the TPI V8's in Camaros and Vettes in the mid 80's? These cars made incredible torque for 305/350's. The reason was they had 8 long, thin runners extending from the plenum out and back into the intake manifold. This setup (long, narrow runners) creates tons of low end torque, but chokes the motor on top end. The predecessor, the LT1, had short wide runners. The end result was less torque, and more mid/top end. This is intake tuning. A spacer between the carb and head will essentially create a longer "runner", and in theory should help with low end and make it more responsive. Its proven to work on car engines (with millions of dollars of research finding the right length). Does it work on quads? Most ppl seem to say they're worthless. Another advantage (especially if the material was made of something other than metal) is to help keep the motor heat off the carb (keeping the fuel and air cooler). Again, a nominal effect and likely not noticeable.

I have to agree very nicely put colby.
I will check out www.1DIRRACING.com. I wanted to make sur it works befor I purchase it, and I wanted to get the right one. Anything to make this quad go faster.

How much do you want to spend? Are you comfortable with pulling the motor and rebuilding the top end? If so, I can walk you through the Macdizzy (http://www.macdizzy.com/1989hopup.htm) rebuild. The site is quite technical, but the general jist is that the ports are too low. So you pull the cylinder, insert a spacer (they sell them), shave a little off the head to compensate for the spacer, and shave a little more to increase compression. This increases flow and timing. They also walk you through how to port, which can be done with a $40 dremel tool. This setup, with an appropriate piston, filter, and exhaust creates a KILLER Blaster. The nice part is the cost is nominal; it's just having the ***** to go in and literally redesign the motor. I did it and was shocked at the results. Ultimately, I sold it because while the motor is easily upgraded, the suspension and brakes are still quite inadequate and not as easily modified.
