96 Sportsman 400 idles rough
#1
Hello All,
I have a 96' Sportsman 400. It starts great, and seems to smooth out when I give it gas, but I think it lacks in power. Also, when it idles, it sounds like it knocks on every few times that it fires. The knocking is rythmic and not random. It's also been known to backfire and die imediately on occasion.
Any idea what I should look for?
Thanks,

Thanks ftwflh,
I will give that a try. The four wheeler was given to me just a couple months ago. It was very dirty and looked like it had been ridden pretty hard. So far, I've put less that $50 in it and I feel like I'm about 90% of the way to having a good machine. Someone else told me I should probably check the timing, what do you think?
Thanks again,
pw

THe timing on a 2stroke isnt like on a 4stroke.Check the compresion and go from there. But a topend rebuild will only run you about $200 and it is good insurance.
