Is it shifting with out any clutch and not letting off the gas? Just jamming through the gears? Or is it when you shift with the clutch, but you don't let off the gas? I've heard that speed shifting is a major culprit of 03' tranny probs, but I'm not certain which way is considered speed shifting. I shift by pulling in the clutch, but not letting off the gas. If this is a problem though I will change my shifting procedures.....thanks

ya speed shifting or shifting w/o the clutch is the reason for 03 trannys going.. it jams it into gear and there for was bending a or breaking the shift forks. you cna do this with most other quads.. but after a while it will break them.. just the pred tranny went quicker and easier than all of them.

It works fine for me Bartlett? So I'm again confused. I've heard both versions being labeled as speed shifting, so which one is it?

the 04's cant do it either? they must have just fixed how smooth it shifts... i will laugh if the 04's have the same problem.. and then my next quad will be red or blue.

I guess I should verify what works for me. I shift by pulling in the clutch, but not letting off the gas. It works perfectly fine on mine. I guess what I'm asking is, is this a bad way to shift on the Pred or not?
It seems to me that this would not be any worse than when you drop the clutch off the start, or when your clutching coming out of corners?
Thanks

*sigh*, ok. Guess its time to change the riding habits alittle. I'd rather be a few 1/10ths of a second slower than have a busted up tranny.

why.. mine as well bust it up while its under warrenty.. (bartlett will hate me for this one LOL!)
there is no sense in treating it like a baby then have it blow when your out of warrenty... but there are some people that got the 03's that have had no problems.. modquad being one of them.. i wonder how he shifts his..

Speed shifting has been around for years . It is the myth that if you stay on the gas wide open and start rowing the gear box you will go faster quicker . While it may slightly make the machine go faster it really shreds on the tranny parts . If you want to shift like that put on an airshifter , it kills the ignition for a split second and unloads the tranny and then grabs the next gear .

Motorcycles can take this abuse slightly better than an ATV , because the single skinny tire can break traction easier during this type of abuse .

Use the clutch , back off the gas , and get the reflexes to do this properly . You will go just as fast without needlessly destroying your transmission .

speed shifting is timimg your shift at the right rpm, without using the clutch and having the throttle pegged------ this works on atvs,cars,motorcylcles,etc.---- shifting without clutching could damage a transmission
