4 batteries dead in 20 hrs riding
#1
Help Guys , I have now killed 4 batteries in 20 hrs sand dune cruising. 04 20hrs from new .
Got bike back from top quad machanic. who says there is nothing wrong with the bike , rectifier is doing what it should and everything else is normal.
batteries just seem to stop , dead , last one happened after a short drag with a yz 450 , (stopped to ask him why he so long to catch up ) and then when i went to start it , nothing but annoying clicking from relay by battery .
Bike wouldn't bump start , so swapped battery from LTZ400 and it fired straight away ...definately battery issue ..
What do i do now , ???
Does this stem from vibrations due to battery box being attached to frame with no absorbtion of vibrations ???
Help , any ideas ???
Im ready to sell bike and go fishing ..........
cheers

My stock battery lasted 3 years, I've never had any battery issues other than my stocker just ultimately not wanting to hold charge overnight anymore.
if you put the supposed bad battery back in, will it start? I mean maybe it was coincidence it started after swapping with the Z400, or maybe it was a connection issue with one of the terminals. Its also possible the other end of the negative cable - where it attaches to the frame - may not have a good connection so take it off and make sure its clean too, and bolt back good and tight. and lastly perhaps the starter solenoid is the culprit, unlikely but possible. and might as well check cable connections on the starter motor too.

Sounds to me like you've got a grounded wire against the frame somewhere that's sucking up whatever power the alternator is producing, I had the same problem years ago with a 550 Nighthawk. Everything checked out OK, but the power wasn't getting to the battery. You'll need to disconnect the battery, and probably separate parts of the wiring harness from any grounds it is supposed to have, and check for continuity to ground. It's a pain in the ***, but the only way to find the problem in my experience.

Thanks guys , but ive tried all those ideas , all 4 batteries are dead , no life at all and wont hold a charge when we try and "recharge " them . The last one we used was a Honda 400ex battery , it stopped so bad , bike wouldn't jump, wouldn't recharge on bench ,,,,,, now im taking it to a specialist to cut open to see what caused the collapse.
The last three were Bomb factory replacements, that just went dead on their own , when we tried to recharge them on the bench they would not hold a charge at all.
I thought it was just bad Bomb batteries , but when the honda one did the same .....go figure ...
now i will have to wait and see what the insides look like and see if that tells us .
This is really getting me down .

I would go with Chillys reply. Sounds like you have a shorting issue of some type. I have been running a 3cyl electric start quad for almost a year on the same battery. Battery power only, i removed the altenator and all of the charging system for weight reduction. You are running a single cyl engine, so battery drain, even if the charging system is not working should be minimal. Good luck
