Why not a Diesel?
#1
I was just looking at Polaris' website and I was wondering why nobody has a Polaris Diesel? The spec. sheet makes the Diesel look very similar to the Sportsman 500. I was wondering what makes a person choose the Sportsman over the Diesel? The options are very similar, the cost is just about the same. I would think the Diesel would have quite a bit more torgue than the Sportsmen even though the engine is slightly smaller. Drop a line, I am curious. When Polaris came out with the Diesel I thought I would start to see a bunch of them..........

The Diesel is not practical for quad use.It is extremly slow, stinks,is noisey, and downright out of place in the ATV world. It wont keep up with any other quad on the trails, cant hill climb and is not a good mudder either. The only use it is good for is slow moving towing or pulling. For that type of use,you should own a tractor anyways. So it can pull a pick up truck? So can my 500cc Sportsman, and when im done working with the Sportsman,I can go and have fun with it in the mud or trails.Try that with the Diesel and tell me how much fun you had.=====Bill

exactly right on on everything, cept why woudln't the diesel be a good hill climber? this thing has mounds of torqe, i don't see it having difficulty going up hills, sure, it may go up then slowly, but you'd still easily make it

Hermz,
If the hill is very hard, you'd be correct, but in Michigan, where im from,we have alot of sand and loose packed ,steep hills. To conquer these types of hills, you need WHEEL SPEED.The Diesel has NO wheel speed, therefore it would probably make it halfway up the hill and just sit there digging its tires and going NO WHERE.=====Bill

Yes, for the everyday Joe, the Diesel is not a good machine to have. But what if you were a construction company, or something like that? All your machinery uses diesel, and you have no need for a high top speed. Plus, the diesel will pull anything. This would fit right in for you then. There is a do-it-all construction company out here that uses them.

we had this disscussion a while ago in the forum.....have a search man.......i found it quite amusing......
hill climbing.....you may have the torque but you probably won't be able to use it (belt drive)...and the way the engine revs you will have less topend because it will only rev to 3000 rpm or something.......which is low compared to a scrambler even a sportsman.....i have heard they vibrate well (high compression).....and they are economic.....mainly suit the utlity market (ie farm or business)....its interesting how polaris has pursude this variation in its model line up....there must be a market out there demanding this product! my friend had an old one in a magnum frame '94 model? i think polaris must see potential in this quad, market segement for it to continue to produce the quad and put it in its line up after 6-8 yrs of production....does anyone over seas know of people who buy these quads....ie england?...they have a variation called the D-BAT over there

Pudding,
My dealer seems to think that the Diesel will not be in production very long.We have 3 dealers in my area.We also have a TON of construction going on,not a single Diesel from ANY one of these dealers has been sold since its introduction. As for pulling?Yes,the Diesel will pull, but my Sportsman will pull any truck in low gear also, I just cant see to many practical uses for a Diesel ATV.=====Bill
