1983 ATC 70 Timing mark
#1
I am rebuilding a 1983 Honda ATC 70 three wheeler that has been in my family since it was new. I have a manual that says line the "F" mark up with the arrow and set the gap on the points between .012-.016, the problem is I cannot find the mark. Any help on finding the mark or general timing or points and condenser help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I ran into this same problem on an '82 model this past Fall.
All manuals say to line up the mark, but there is no mark!! I lined up the F mark with the center of the pickup on the stator[towards the front of the bike] and it runs like a charm. I think maybe the mark they referring to is actually on this pickup and not on the crankcase cover like they say it is.

The flywheel says T and F on the inner side of it. You line them up with a little notch in the case halves. You'll see the points just start to open at f and fully open by t.They should be set at .012-.016.

jjp,
Where are this notch?......... If possible to explain in the forum.
I'm not doubting you. I would just like to really know where it is for future reference.
I can't see very well upclose....is the notch really noticable or something you need a magifying glass to find....LOL
Thanks.

Whenever I have run across ths situation I will stattic (sp?) time the unit.
Take a dial indicator with the appropriate plug hole adapter and turn the engine to find true TDC and make a mark on the case where the T mark lands acording to the dial indicator reading. Line up the F mark with the newly scribed mark and you should be spot-on.
Here is a tip. Make sure the advancer plate is not 180 off (turn engine over in normal direction with the tappet covers off, TDC will be after the intake valve closes, and make sure of the point cam position) also check for wear on the weights and that the springs holding the weights are tight. This will cause many problems if the holes in the weights where the springs mounts are oblonged or springs are streatched (loose), trouble from starting to acceleration advance timimg will occor.

Yeah it is just a small notch on the outside of the case half. Probaly just look about half way across the stator plate and straight up.Maybe get some brake cleaner and a wire brush and you should find it.

Har! Aren't these little buggers just the darndest! I work on the big stuff and No Problemo, but when it comes to a little thing like this...Oh Man! I remember a mark on the cam sprocket that points to 12 o'clock (either a notch in the cylinder or high noon if no notch). On the botom the "t" mark lines up with the notch or other mark. I have a service manual that covers all these old Honda singles, but I don't have access to it until tomorrow. I hope we're helping you, alot of these little engines are a bit vague...ask me sometime about the TRX 90 hop up...or don't because I'll freak out and go run and hide somewhere with the mere mention of it!
