Replacing Rear Axle Bearings
#1
I ordered just a set of bearings and seals. Is there anything else in there. A buddy of mine mentioned that there may be some sort of raceway that may need to be replaced. How hard was it for you guys to replace the bearings and seals? I did it on a Raptor and the hardest part was driving in the bearings and seals (I ordered a seal driver to hopefully make this task easier). What kind of grease is recommended? Just squirt grease all over the housing or in it? Any info... would be appriciated.

the new inner races will come with the new bearings - do not try to shortcut by leaving the old races in and reusing them, this will only decrease the life of the new bearings. always use new races with new bearings.
there's an o-ring that keeps water out of the brake hub spline, chances are it may get damaged during disassembly but it can be bought at the local hardware store r autoparts sotre.
when installing the new races, heat the carrier in the oven and put the races in the freezer, this aint no joke, if you do this the races will literally drop right in. whatever you do, don't scratch the race surface.
synthetic grease with moly is recommended - I use a synthetic grease I bought from an autoparts store for marine use, my bearings are over 3 years old and have over 300 hours on them, but I clean and repack them annually.
these tapered bearings are much stronger than the normal bearing used in all the other qauds, alot of the ones replaced were replaced for no reason by people misunderstanding how they work. if there is play in an axle that doesn't mean the bearings are bad, it may only mean that the axle nut is loose. tightening the nut elliminates play.

axle removal
This thread should get you started.
The races should come with the bearings, they are the same part # so they should come as a set. syn grease with moly is what to use.
I just changed mine, although I think they were OK. I got mine from a local bearing house for about $35 with tax, the dealer wanted $60.(bearings & seals). If anybody wants the part # off these bearings let me know.
Hightower gave me the sizes for all the O rings, If I find that info I will post it.
Over all it was easier to change the seals on the DS than the raptor, but it all depends on the condition of everything. On the raptor the carrier had water~mud rust, so It was a pain, My DS was much cleaner.
Find a 36 mm socket, if you don't have an impact wrench, take the wheel off before you take the hub off, that some bitch is tight if you have never taken it off before.
There is an O ring in the brake hub, that will get stuck at the on the grove where the axle nut axle nut clip is, just give it a tug over it.
Let me know if you have any problems
