im posting this in both boards.
ok i can get a leftover 2003 honda 400ex for 4800 or a new z400 for normal price. what should i go for? im just trail riding and screwing around on my land, also going to Sand Pits every once in awhile.

well actually I'd say get the 400ex because its what about an 800 dollar price difference then you could get some mods for the ex like pipe, filter, jet kit, and maybe ported and then you'll be ahead of the z400.
what are you talking about? my friends 400ex comes up just as quick as a raptor
Get a z400 because they come up easier.on a 400ex u have to put your knee on the seat in 4th gear so get a z400 trust me

I have both, so I don't have any hidden agenda here! They are both great trail bikes. The Z is certainly faster, handles a little lighter, and has reverse. The EX handles well, and is dead solid reliable. I love both engines, but for different reasons. The Z has a great modern DOHC engine, that likes to rev. The EX has a time proven engine, that can be lugged down in tight places.
If the trails you ride are REAL tight and somewhat technical, the EX has the edge. If they are more open, go with the Z. If price is an issue, you won't regret just getting the EX.

i kinda want the 400ex though because like you said with the 800 dollars extra i could buy some mods, but i dont wanna mod it too much
o ya also, which is more reliable? as in i wont ahve to fix it as much thats my main concern, not really worried about top speed just the Fun factor =D

I was faced with that exact same situation and went with the Honda. Haven't had any regrets. I had to get use to not having reverse but its not a big problem...................and it has the exact same performance as a Z400 but mines an 04................

Honda is as reliable as they get. Honda handles a little better in stock form. The Z has liquid cooling, reverse, and three more HP.
I'm seeing new 04 EXs listed at $4399 around here.
That would be a tough call for me, if I had to do it again.

JuJU,
The leftover 2003 selling for $4800 is a good deal because it retailed for $5700.............but the 2004 models dropped in retail price to $5200........That's why QuadFather was mentioning the low price 2004.
If you go with the EX, try looking for a deal on a 2004. You should be able to find one at least for the $4800 price of the 2003 you found.

I have a 400ex and love it. I think it handles just a little bit better than the Z but it is really close. They are both a lot of fun to ride. I would not worry about it being air cooled. I have never had a problem with mine. If you keep your oil cooler cleaned out from a muddy ride and maintain the bike you will be fine. If you are still worried about cooling, you can buy air scoops from UMracing.com. I just boght a set for mine. They are easy to install and look really cool. I think you would injoy either quad so good luck and be safe!
