I'm getting right around 50 PSI. Is that enough?

yeah around 120.....but be sure to take off the air filter(and kill the engine with the kill switch before cranking) and hold the throttle wide open with the spark plug out and the compression gauge screwed tightly into the spark plug hole....then make sure you battery cranks the engine fast and keep cranking till the gauge quits going up.....

100 as a minimum, and a 'healthy' engine will have 110-120.

I'm betting that's my problem then. I didn't have the airfilter off, so I'll try that this afternoon. I'll do some searching for some part costs today too. I'm guessing new piston, rings.....

While you have the air filter out - check the round air box throat where the rubber boot to the carb attaches - a lot of times on this style air box, the throat cracks at the bottom of the juction of the throat and airbox, letting the nasties in that eat the rings.
