Can you believe this???

I was getting registered earlier today with the ama so I could race my ex, and they say their limits for age are if you're under 16 you can ride nothing over a 300cc 4 stroke or a 250cc 2 stroke. Now, that would be fine if I was a small guy, but the fact of the matter is I'm 6'2" and 200lbs. Now, I've ridden my buddies blasters and they're slow, kiddy quads. With just a pipe and air filter my ex feels a little weak to me sometimes and I can toss that thing around like it's weightless. Does the ama not realize that kids come in different sizes and riding abilities or what? I have the Minnesota safety training license that more than clearly states: the above name is entitled to the privileges granted by Minnesota statutes. They stressed the recently passed law, that says anyone age 12-15 who has completed the class can ride any displacement atv as long as they "FIT" the machine. Now it has some restrictions like not ditch riding and stuff but ditches are plenty clear of the race track. I'm so because they are basically banning me from organized racing. There is no way I can fit on a 300ex or a tiny little blaster. I'm going to call the main commisioner guy tomorrow and talk to him about the minnesota licensing thing. My mom talked to him today but did not know that I was riding completely legally, and that I can legally ride any quad I want to. Although they said I couldn't race atvs, I could go out and buy a brand new dirtbike whatever displacement I saw fit and race it. There is no limitation on bikes whatsoever and at 15 I could ride a 500cc two stroke dirtbike with full factory support, but could not race a near stock 400ex. Is it just me or does anyone else see some error in their thinking????

wow man i bet your pretty angry i would be to if were in your shoes. so let me get this straight you have your safety lincenc that allows you to drive any size quad legaly but yet they want let you ride above a 300cc??? that doesnt sound right, have you told them you took the test? if u have have you proved it to them? well it seems to me that u need to call them up and just tell them that u took the class and u can legaly ride a quad over 300cc. thats just my 2 cents.

yeah. The test says by passing everything, that I can ride whatever I want because I'm so big. It is a somewhat recent law and class that were provided but you'd think the ama would get wind of it. When my mom talked to the rep for mx quads in Minnesota she said I had the safety permit. The guy thought she was talking about the old safety permit that they use to give that didn't really do anything. The new one I took will let me ride anything by passing the test. Now that I got the facts lined up for her, she's gonna call again tomorrow and talk to him. I kind of think this is a lost cause here, but you never know. I'm not sure about the 2 stroke limit though I think it's 250 or smaller for MN. If that's what the age limits are my dad's thinking about going out this week and picking up a 250r for me to race, he's that serious about it. My quad would still be the ex that I paid for, and his quad would be the 250, but I would just race the 250. Any help on the topic would be appreciated. I was starting to wonder if it was just me that thought these restrictions are a little outrageous.

The ATVA (AMA) is a santioning body. They have come up with rules for their santioned events. Your state has absolutely nothing to do with the ATVA and their events.
Maybe you should have looked into the rules first.
ACTUALLY, 2 years ago youy would not have been able to race anything but a 90cc quad up to 15 years old.The rules have been addressed and changed for the good of "most". We were lucky to get it changed to what it is!!!!
If I was you, I'd look for non ATVA santioned events till your 16.
The difference between quads and bikes is the CPSC.

I know I was thinking about the rules earlier today, and realized Minnesota had nothing to do with it. Yes, I'm happy they started to raise the age limit and show some support for the sport, but the fact that I can't race (ama) doesn't change. Hopefully we can work to get some of these restrictions taken off, and make some more realistic rules. I don't have anything against the ama and look forward to racing next season I was looking forward to actually having a little competition, and was getting pumped for getting my butt kicked, oh well, I guess I gotta wait another year.

sounds like we're screwed right now. I don't blame the ama I blame people with heads up their butts that thing atv's are more dangerous than bikes. The 450 will be a big step up from the 300, take it easy if you step up. Toss the hrc kit on, and fix the high first gear problem. I like www.armca.org and mnracing.com but they're both minnesota sites. I'm sure if you searched around you could find a site like the two above for Arizona. There are plenty of people on the forums from Arizona, do some searches and keep your eye on the where to ride and atv racing forums. Private racing with your buds and stuff are best bet for now. If you're not too tall/heavy you can always just keep racing your 300. Hopefully we can get some stuff changed with the ama and you'll be able to race something bigger before you're 16. Good luck.

i think those rules are great because i know some 15 year old kids that aren't close to how tall you are or your wieght. so if they would say will let you race they would have to let all the 12-15 year old kids race. plus i think a 250 2stroke is still fast. so if you really couldn't just wait a year get 250r but a years not that long to wait, as for the younger kids i would say to get your self a 250r or a 300ex till your 16. their all great bikes, ha i'd take a 300ex anyday just because i'v been riding a crappy yamaha beartracker for the last 3 years. i finally get to get my 400ex NEXT MONTH! can't wait, i'm 16 so i don't have to wait to race
