Hey Wes,

You are right about all the different ways to break-in an engine. Even Honda has conflicting info at times how to do it depending on what year the book is dated.....LOL

Based on this, I will just tell you how I do it.

First, I make sure the carb is clean and the filter is clean. This is especially important if it's been down a long time.

I take the valve adjuster caps off and add a couple teaspoons of motoroil before intial startup. I run the engine for about 5 to 8 minutes just blipping the throttle, but not past 1/4 throttle. I do this 2 or 3 times depending on what all I replaced during the buildup.

After that, I start the engine and ride it around for about 30 minutes straight not giving it anything past 1/2 throttle and not holding the revs at any given RPM for more than maybe 10 seconds.

I park it to let it cool down. After cooling down, I ride the machine a bit harder for about 15 minutes. Then another cool down.

I take it kind of easy on the first full tank of fuel.

After this, I consider the thing broken in.........I adjust the valves, put in a new spark plug, and change the oil and oil filter.

If I replaced any componets like a camshaft or different bore or compression piston, I do my jetting tests at this time and jet acordingly.

Alot of people find my way bizarre but it has always worked for me

Knowsalot's way sounds pretty logical........After I went through mine, I put about a half a quart of oil in the top of the motor first, and gave it time to drain down. As soon as I fire it up I screw in the idle screw ( I am a old school guy, and I do not like a fresh engine to set at idle) After I was satisfied all would stay in tact, I found the biggest hill I could find and kept in at 1/2 throttle in first gear and lugged it up the hill. Torque will seat rings faster and better than high rpm!

I also heard to break it in how you want it to run. Just not to hold the throttle down.

wes.....to a point...yes! you just have to remember that the parts are not matched together yet. Some people baby them for a long period of time. Break in can be done within one full day of riding, then give er' hell!
