What stuck the rings to the piston? Was it silt wedged between the ring and the ring land?

yes, I had the same misfortune as you and your bud. I took it to my local Kawi shop and was told I would have to have a rebuilt engine. I decided to get a second opinion because this shop is a little shady anyway. I went to a local small engine repair shop, where I knew the guys personally, they started by simple things like changing oil multiple times, and simply cleaning everything very well. They ended up finding out the reason it wouldn't turn over was that there was water in the piston chambers ( or whatever you call them I'm not a mechanic by no means).

So basically the cylinders were full of water and the engine couldn't force that water out by just simply turning over by trying to crank up. He somehow drained that water and after a little more TLC. I'm here today riding the same machine for only $160 dollars instead of Kawi's $1800.

Not saying this is an answer for you but hope it helps.

the two top rings were stuck in the ring grove. the bottom scraper was free. it didnt hurt the cyl walls. i used a small pick to remove stuck rings. bubble honed the cyl . and installed new std. rings. i run klotz synthetic in my bike. i called kawasaki they said it shouldnt have any affect. now i am more careful about running in deep water!!!!!! rick

Here in California, we don't have standing water thats deep enough to sink a quad, unless it's in a lake!
