Default Do I absolutely HAVE to use Polaris branded AGL trans oil?

Hey guys. I just realized that after I tried to instantly and unsuccessfully convert my '06 Sportsman 800 into a Skipjack-class submarine (Good reading: Skipjack class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) two winters ago that I never changed my trans oil.

The '05 manual I found online (which I assumed was the same as the '06) says I require 15 oz of Polaris AGL oil. My question is can I use another brand of oil? Maybe something I can buy at Advance Auto or Auozone today? Like what does 'Polaris AGL' translate into for laymens terms? Is it 80w90 or 90w140 or something more sinister like ATF?

Thanks so much in advance.

Semper fi, Erik

The only other brand of chain case lube I would recomend would be AMSOIL.But the Polaris stuff is best. You have to remember this is not a gear case it is a chain case and needs the proper lube.

Less expensive doesn't always mean lower quality. A lot of times something with a 'brand name' isn't even made by the brand but you pay all the $$$ in the world because of the 'brand name'.

i do understand that and yes i know that polaris doesn't make thier own oils as does most other mfg's. my point is that i spend $9,000 on my wheeler and why would i worry about a few extra $$ for the called for oil's. each to thier own i guess.

I'm not looking to dump in $0.99/qt no name oil, I just can't see spending the premium on something if I can get literally the exact same something for much less.

Just because I spent $9000 on my machine doesn't necessarily mean I'm rich either.

Some of us have no choice but to worry about the few extra $$ also.

I think there has been a few threads on this before that you can search to find an alternate but my opinion is to stick with the Popo stuff, especially if it's under warranty. I've mentioned to others that even though the Popo stuff is more expensive it also lets the dealer know you are taking care of your machine which goes a long way when having to deal with the service dept on any isuues you may have.

I agree.
Those sales receipts from the Polaris dealer are worth their weight in gold X 10 if it comes to a warranty issue.JMHOP
