I have been using Bel ray 85w gear oil. I would pick up a ratio cup ($5). This way you can measure the exact cc's that go into the crankcase. There will be a small screw on the side of the case. This is how you check the oil level on a 250r. Put the bike on a level place and remove the screw. A little oil will come out. If nothing comes out you are low and should.change the oil or add more.

I use AMSOIL 20W-50. To change the oil, just clean around the drain plug, oil fill cap, and oil check screw. Next take a 17mm(I think) and remove the oil plug, make sure you are on level ground. Remove the fill cap and oil check screw(10mm) to allow the oil to drain better. Let it drain for about 10 minutes. Put the drain plug in, add oil until it starts to come out of the check screw hole. You should use about 3/4 of a quart. Put the check screw and fill cap back in, start the machine and let it run for a minute. Recheck the level of oil from the check screw hole and you are done. Be sure not to over tighten the check screw and drain plug! They will strip easily if over tightened. Also, the oil will drain better if it is warm.
