Default Buying a 98 trail boss with bad tranny

I could use some advice and some direction on how much of the tranny to go through rebuilding. The current owner says the dogs are worn. Looks like those parts are 40 dollars for each end so can I do this without special tools? Anything else I should do while I have the tranny apart?? New to these four wheeled critters, but it looks like fun....

TIA

Turns out it was a 95 model and the guy sold it while I was driving the ten minutes it took to get over to his house. BAh.... I ended up buying the kid a xr100 that needs a piston and ring. I hope I can tackle that one ok....... Thanks for the replys.
