Default missed shifts between 1-2, up and down

many times when I try and shift between 1 and 2, it will just go into neutral. is this a common problem? I am gonna get a 15t front sprocket to gear down a little, so hopefully I wont have shift 1-2 in the woods, I'll be able to keep it in 2. also this is a pain when I drag race sometimes. if i get the 15t sprocket, can I start off in 2nd when racing?? thanks a lot for any info.

When I drag around here I always start off in second with my stock sprocket. And to be honest I have only lost once because i missed 4th. Now remember I said around here, and that isn't implying that I could beat anything. But yes start out in second and you should never need 1st.

Neutral is between 1 and 2nd

It sounds like a 15 tooth would be best for your type of riding and drag racing

I hope you don't have a shift fork problem

Bent shifting fork in older model transmissions is quite common.

Try adjusting your shifter. I had mine too high and would miss second all the time. Drop it down a bit and it will be easier to throw into second.

I think it was 2003? Anyone else know?

I think it was something they did mid-year too so. . Some 2003's have the older shift forks and some have the newer ones.

The newer ones are black.

Also, if you are in there you may want to get your gears undercut (especially if they have any wear on the engagement dogs!)

I had alot of issues tripping into neutral when my bike was new, not so much now. I lowered the shifter one notch cause it was a bit high for me, that helped alot, but still hit it occasionally dragging. I geared down for 2nd gear starts - this is better anyway because 1st and 2nd have a longer ratio gap than all the other gears and performance is better shifting 2nd to 3rd to 4th, rather than 1st to 2nd to 3rd IMO.

I'll try lowering the shifter 1 notch. hopefully the 15t sprocket will help too.
