Tag or Permit on National Forest
#1
I've got a question for ATV riders in National Forest. For as long as I can remember the State of Georgia has issued tags to ATV's to ride on National Forest roads only. You did not need one to ride on the atv trails, just designated gravel roads between trails. Last April the Tag Dept. stopped issuing tags. Said they couldn't justify it any longer since atv's don't meet highway safety standards. Now the Forest Ranger issues a ticket to anyone on these roads without a tag and will tell you "I know you can't buy a tag but you must have a tag." Sorry for going on but my question is..What do other states require for atv's to ride on Federal and State lands? I've heard some issue permits. Any help would be appreciated.

In Ohio, to ride on state land, you just need the state registration sticker which cost $7.25 for three years. In order to ride in the Wayne National Forest (the only national forest in Ohio), you need to have a state registration sticker and you need to purchase a trail permit from the Wayne National Forest. These permits run $5 per day or $25 per year. These permits allow you to ride on the designated trails in the national forest only. You are not suppose to ride on the stone roads unless they are part of the trail. Hope this helps. Ride safe.

IN Washington state if you want to ride on state land you need a current or valid ORV sticker & your quad must be registered. You can ride on trails & dirt/ logging roads. This cost about $20 for the year.
The federal land is totally different. You can only ride on designated trails. No riding on the roads in the National forests whether they are dirt or gravel. The rangers will tickit you.

In Idaho, you purchase an OHV sticker for ten dollars and then, also get a motorcycle plate for another ten dollars, then you're covered on any unpaved road in the state. We just got the law changed this past legislative session so we can ride on forest service roads without fear of getting a ticket.
