Default 87 Big Red Rear Brakes

OK...

The rear brake is stuck on my ATC250es. I set the parking brake to replace the battery, and after starting her back up, attempted a test ride - just to find out that I wasn't goin' anywhere!

Tried rocking back and forth. Took the tire off and tried a big hamer. Both tries were without result. Would anyone else know how to "UNSTICK" it???

Thanks for your time!!

We had a 125m do that one time. what we had to do on it was take the drum/cover assembly off and un-freeze it from the inside. It was the arm that spreads the brake shoes apart doing it.

Take it apart.....they sometimes have a tendancy to get mud inside the drum..... take lots of brake cleaner and probably a pressure washer .

hey... there's an idea!! I have both a pressure washer and a can of brake cleaner. Now if I just knew how to take the drum apart!

I took the right tire/rim off already. Do I attack it from the same side?

Could you give me an idea of how to pull the drum apart?

There should be a doublenut on the axle, remove these and then remove the cable mechanism. using 2 screw drivers gently pry both sides of the drum until you can get your hand in there to pull it the rest of the way. This will then expose the drum area. IThis is where the pressure washer comes in handy. purchase a new gasket and ensure that the water drain screw can be removed.

If you need a visual there is an exploded view at Bikebandit.com

Hope this helps

OK...

I printed off the exploded view from BikeBandit.com. It's a little scratchy, but legible nonetheless.

Does anyone know where I can get another view of this part? I know I should go buy a Clymer manual for this trike, but I had a 185s manual for the 185s I owned, and that covered too many different variations (more often the ones I DIDN'T NEED) and wasn't very intuitive to follow.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

I have the Clymer for my 86 Big Red. I think it's great. I'm just a shade tree mechanic, and so far it's had the exact diagram for my application. I think you would be happy with it. My $.02.

OK...You sold me on it. Buying one today.

By the way - I got it fixed without having to pull it apart.

Here's what I did:

Loosened ALL the rear brake cables so the brake lever arm was completely free of impediment. Started her up. Put it in gear and tried to move forward in 1st. That didn't work, so I put it in reverse and applied a little more throttle....BINGO. Unstuck (after a loud POP).

Shut her down and re-adjusted all the rear brake cables to apply on demand, but not to the point that it causes the shoes to stick again. I think the initial problem was the fact that the rear brake was adjusted so that you needed a HE-MAN grip to just set the parking brake, thus causing it to stick.

I know I will eventually need to replace the shoes, but I don't think that it's necessary at this point, as the rear brakes work great.

Thanks to everyone who answered the thread!! Nice to know there are still 3 wheeled enthusiasts out there and I'm glad I came across the site!

Until next time!~
