The ’03 is essentially the same as an ’02 but at least some of the ‘03s had CV joints that were from a different supplier that were weaker than what was found on the ’02. As a result the ’03 units (with these parts) were notorious for breaking CV joints.

From what I understand, something was done to the ’04 model to improve the high speed handling characteristics of the machine. A front diff-lock rev limiter over-ride button was also added on the ’04 models, and finally the ’04 model received vented side panels and improved heat shielding to prevent the gas boiling issues (that caused engine sputtering when throttle was applied suddenly) that the ’02 and ’03 models were noted for (when they were ridden slow for extended periods of time). Note however Yamaha has come out with a “heat kit” that applies the same side panels and heat shielding to the ’02 and ’03 models. This heat kit is available from Yamaha and installed at no charge by the dealer for original owners of these ’02 and ’03 machines (I’m not sure if the free installation applies to anyone that bought a used machine)…

Side panels for better cooling, but I believe Yamaha is offering a kit for 02-03 owners for free. I also had heard that they had stiffened up the suspension, but Im not 100% sure on that. I had also heard/read somewhere that the CVs on the 03 were a little bit weaker then the 02s, after some problems with the 03s they went back to the 02s for the 04s.

This is all that I have heard off, there maybe more

What is a front diff-lock rev limiter over-ride button?

The new override button allows the engine to make maximum rpm in full diff lock mode for the 04 Griz.
There is a new ratchet gas cap to provide a better seal supposedly.
The early Griz 660 had transmission breathers (If my memory is correct) the 04 has a sealed drive case.

This is good info, as I am also in the market for one of these. The override button is to eliminate the rev limiter that is turned on with the reverse and Differential lock modes. Does the button override reverse also?

The '04 has a button to override the rev limiter when in diff lock mode, but it does not have a button for overriding the reverse rev limiter. I have however seen "do it yourself" postings a while back on this forum that gave directions for implementing your own rev limiter override switches for both reverse ('02 and beyond) and diff lock (for pre '04 models)...
