Default 1996 polaris sportsman 500 transmission oil question

I was wondering if anyone has used another brand of oil to put in the transmission? if so what kind do you use?
Also is it normal to have the oil turn gray after riding it for awhile?

tuffguy31, Amsoil synthetic is the way to go. Grey oil is not normal sounds like you may have a lot of metal shavings in the oil. If you want superior protection for your trans try Amsoil. For more info and a free product catalog go to:

Its the Amsoil Series 2000 Chaincase lube to be more specific. I guess Klotz makes a chaincase lube as well. Those are about your only 2 substitutes

Thanks for the help guys. My oil has been grey in color since i have owned it and can't see where water might be getting in, i also never notice any metal shavings in the oil when i change it, Just thought it changed color as it was used. I currently use the Polaris synthetic premium Chaincase oil that is recommended and notice that it is purple in color when i put it in but after a ride it is grey...........hmmmmmmm. Any idea what is going on?

It is definately some water seepage that's turning your oil grey,.. or sometimes referred to as "milky".
As sealed as they make atv's,.. there's still ways for H20 to creep in here and there,.. that's the reason I change mine 2x / year. We ride a LOT of water and mud, and after about the 5th weekend of hard riding, the color starts to change on mine.
